If people do this to me, they get hurt. I find it so creepy and such an invasion of space. I already have issues sleeping around people. Doing this would not endear anyone to me.

(People can try to wake me up other ways; I'm a heavy sleeper and sometimes need help. But staring at me intensely while I sleep? That's Edward Cullen levels of creep.)

As for everyone going, "OMG! How could you?" well, you're fortunate enough not to be my friend. Trust me, if she was seriously bothered by it, she would have told me to stop. Instead, she just does something to me in return. The only reason we're friends at all is because we kept doing crap to each other and decided it was rather fun - so for us, it's part of our tradition.

-shrug- I guess I'm the odd one out for actually laughing at it (Mainly because it sounds a lot like something me and my friend would do with each other). I didn't really see any problems with it.

The problem I had with it wasn't the "stare awake" thing itself, it was this:

Someone did it to me once. I found it incredibly violating and creepy.

Me too. Which is why I have a bad habit of doing it to a friend of mine.

It doesn't matter so much what the thing is - whether it's stare-awake, or reading postcards not addressed to you, or tickling, or whatever.  If Person A considers something "incredibly violating", but nevertheless does that something to Person B, either they know that B doesn't consider it violating (which seems to be the case here, but there was no indication of it in the initial exchange), or else A wants to violate (or at minimum is okay with violating).  Which, eww.

I see. I suppose the "me too" was directed more towards the "creepy" part than the "violating" part. Should pay more attention to what I'm saying sometimes.

The pace of progress in artificial intelligence (I’m not referring to narrow AI) is incredibly fast. [...] The risk of something seriously dangerous happening is in the five year timeframe. 10 years at most.--Elon Musk

I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence," [Bill] Gates wrote. "First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern. I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don\'t understand why some people are not concerned."

We never did it to be malicious or to violate or creep her out.  It was just one of the fun things you can do to/with friends.  She'd just wake up with an, "Oh, is it that time?" attitude.

I had never heard of a negative experience with this until, as I said, my step-daughter's mom.

Maybe it's with the intent given/done...?

Best~
