- A native New Yorker, I was raised in the Long Island suburbs without any religion. A chance encounter with Starhawk's THE SPIRAL DANCE in my twenties revealed to me that I'd been a practicing pagan without realizing it; still, I resisted the label, since--being Black and gay--I didn't want to further marginalize myself. Resistance was futile.
