IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Changing the Guard at The Cauldron
« on: October 07, 2019, 02:20:34 pm »
On December 13, 1997 -- after three frustrating days when only Elspeth Sapphire, Ann Wilson, and myself could post -- The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum opened its doors to the general public on the Delphi online service. The forum was an instant success with 60 or 70 messages posted that December and hitting 1000 messages within six months or so. That's 1000 messages total, not 1000 messages a month.

The Cauldron was started as a Yule gift from me to Elspeth -- you had to pay Delphi for forums back then (six months in advance). It was staffed by Elspeth, Ann, and myself with an able assist from our friends from the dying GEnie Online Service. We started a web site for the forum in the web space I got with my Delphi account in January of 1998, although we did not get domain name for a couple of years.

LyricFox was added as a fourth Co-Host a few years later as Elspeth's health and Ann's real life meant that they were not always available. LyricFox and I shouldered most of the hosting duties up until 2014 when Lyric's mom passed away, Lyric's health worsened, and Lyric's decided to focus her remaining spoons on her animal rescue work. While she was still a Co-Host and had input on just about every TC decision I made, she was no longer active on the board.

It's been almost 22 years since TC started. I was 40 back then. I'm now 62 and Lyric's health issues (now including MS) are demanding more and more of my time. If The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum is to have any chance of surviving another 20 years, it is time for Lyric and myself to step down from our host duties and let others run The Cauldron. Effective today, SunflowerP is The Cauldron's Host with almost all the powers Lyric and I held as Co-Hosts. I am now Site Administrator. That means I will handle all the server-side background stuff that keeps The Cauldron on the Internet and that's about it. I also have to approve any promotions to Senior Staff or Host (as those positions have limited server powers). Sunflower as Host will have full control of just about everything else. Basically, as Site Admin I "hire" Hosts and let them do their job. I will not be disappearing completely, of course, but you will probably see much less of me than you do now -- and you haven't seen that much of me recently.

I would like to thank Sunflower for agreeing to accept the position of Host and all the headaches that come with the position. Lyric and I believe we are leaving The Cauldron in good hands. I'd also like to thank the staff of The Cauldron -- present and past -- for all their hard work over the years. It's been our pleasure to work with all of you. Finally, I'd like to thank the members of The Cauldron as without active members the The Cauldron would be just another forum killed by social media. May the Gods bless you all.

And with that Lyric and I formally turn the hosting duties over to Sunflower.

Thank you, Randall. (I'm sure there will be days when that becomes, 'Curse you, Randall!' ;D)

Hi, Cauldronites!

I could post something introductory here, but most of you know me at least as well as you know Randall. I'm not, in 'meatlife' chronology, much of an instance of 'next generation', since I'm 58, only 5 years younger than Randall - but in 'Cauldron time', I am, since TC was already well-established when I first joined in 2005. I became staff just over ten years ago, and senior staff a little over five years ago.

There won't be any major changes to TC under my hosting; it will remain a pagan-centred interfaith discussion and debate forum (if I wanted to run any other sort of forum, I'd have started one; I like TC for what it is). There will be - already are, in several cases - some visible changes, since Randall's semi-retirement, Lyric's retirement, and my promotion to host naturally entail position changes farther down.

As you can see in the staff masthead in the right-hand sidebar, Darkhawk has my former job as Message Board Coordinator; Jenett, Aisling, Sefiru, and (less visibly) Morag are all now Senior Staff. We're also in the process of taking on some new staff; see the announcement thread.

You might also notice - not now, but when I have time to do it - a change on the main rules page, not to the content, the rules themselves, but to the formatting: I'm going to switch from bullet points to numbering. This is for ease of reference only; it is not, an should not be construed as, rating the relative importance of the rules - if it's in the rules, it matters enough to be in the rules.

Thank you, Randall, for creating this place, and to both you and Lyric for tending it for so long. I don't have much contact with other pagans outside of it (and to the extent I do, much of it is a direct result of meeting folks in this forum), and without question I call it home for my pagan self. For that I remain forever grateful.

Sunflower, I can't think of anyone else who could hope take on the mantle. You know, overcommitted as I am in mundane life, that I'm at your disposal, as much as I'm able. I think the best tribute we can give to Randall and Lyric (esp. since they're not gone, and therefore still around to see it) is to keep this place thriving. Let's all of us make it so!
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

Couldn't express it any better.

Thank you Randall and Lyric for creating and maintaining this virtual space for so very long.  I'm so glad to be a part of this amazing place and am looking forward to seeing where the next 20 years will take us.

I've already said this more privately, but out here in public - thank you so much, Randall and Lyric, for both keeping this place going, and for thinking about the future.

I started here (or more precisely on the Yahoo email list) ... somewhere about 20 years ago. (I think it was late fall 1999, but it might have been mid-2000, and at this point I can't figure that out.) It's been one of my homes on the 'Net for all that time, a place I check into frequently.

The Cauldron has seen me through every stage of my Pagan life so far, from being someone who was trying to decide if this thing might be for me, my early search for a group, and then through my witchy training. And through a marriage, divorce, two cross-country moves, and so many other things in my life. There's nothing like it for thoughtful, long-form discussion of complex topics where you can stand a decent chance of finding that conversation from three years ago again.

And thank you to Sunflower for taking on the responsibility for keeping things going (and I'm delighted to get to be a part of that.) And thanks to all the people whose posts, questions, comments, insights, and work have made this such a fabulous place. May it continue!

Thank you all for creating and maintaining such a great space!  I have to second the mention of not being killed by social media, because as much as I do use social media, forums have always had my heart.  There is a quality to communication that often gets lost in social media, and I have found it here, for many years.  So thank you for creating this space, and thank you for thinking forward towards maintaining it in the years to come.

Not going to lie: when I saw the bright red font, I thought The Cauldron was shutting down, and I almost had a moment... but luckily I read the words, and saw that it's switching hands.

Randall (and Lyric and Elspeth and Ann): thank you so much for creating The Cauldron and keeping it going. I am so happy that this exists because the other places I was at were... not adequate or simply ghost towns. This place is thriving, and I keep coming back because I always learn something new while I'm here.

SunflowerP: I know you're going to be an amazing Host - I know it'll grow and evolve under your tutelage. Congratulations!!

the execution of a Randallite official at the Place de la Communauté Cauldron, 2019

The autumn of 2019 saw the last gasps of the ancien regime which had ruled The Cauldron since its foundation. King Randall was an aged man and the prior unsuccessful attempt to relocate his court to a favourable climate only further weakened his hold on power. Increasingly the King withdrew from public life, appearing for only a handful of occasions before returning to the safety of his palace. Rumours swirled at court of movements by Randall’s closest advisors to ensure that a succession would be… orderly. The hushed whispers of gossiping courtiers would soon ring clear throughout the land.

On October 7th Lee Tournesol, Grand Marshal of The Cauldron and longtime power-behind-the-throne, entered the capitol at the head of a battalion of soldiers handpicked for their loyalty. Without fuss they established a perimeter around the Palais des Hôtes and tried to present the appearance of order rather than belying the nature of the coup. Marshal Lee entered the Palace alone and went to ‘discuss His Majesty’s plans for the future’ in private. When the Marshal reappeared on a balcony facing Place de la Communauté the King, ashen, stood alongside them.

Ultimately King Randall’s attempt to avoid disaster through abdicating would fail — at least on a personal level. Now acclaimed as Sovereign Monarch and Consul of the Republic, Lee immediately took steps to clean house and consolidate their position. Many government officials were sidelined or quietly executed in the aftermath of the new regime’s birth, simultaneous with a fresh slate of promotions for those loyal to the cause. The withered aristocracy of The Cauldron, ancients who had attended to the kingdom for many years, saw the writing on the wall and threw their support behind the new government as well.

King Randall’s imprisonment was perhaps destiny. The old man still garnered affection from a population which respected his capable and well-meaning time at the helm and could prove to be a rallying-point for dissenters. Although efforts had been made to keep relations cordial between the retired King and the new Sovereign Monarch realpolitik eventually won the day: months after his abdication, Randall was dragged from a stately retirement on charges of ‘technical malfeasance’. The verdict of the trial was never in doubt.

Hee!

I would like to clarify that Castus's well-written and amusing post is fictional; while some of the parallels it draws are accurate, others are not. In particular, I have not imprisoned or executed anyone, nor are there any plans for any such thing.

Of course, I'd say that anyway, wouldn't I? ;D
