Need help with setting up a Anubis & Bast Kemetic altar
« on: December 14, 2012, 01:29:38 am »
So I have a few questions? I already have an altar set up at home with Bast on it and some crystals to represent the 5 elements. I will be looking into getting an Anubis representation as well. I was wondering what colour cloths or symbols would be good to have on my altar to appease them? As well as different items?
Thanks, Arianna

If you're going with traditional Kemetic colors, white and gold are acceptable for all of the gods. I associate Anpu (Anubis) with black as well, for His death/liminal deity aspect. I'm not familiar with Bast though, so I'll defer that to someone more knowledgeable.

Thank you this is very helpful to me :) Would you associate Anubis with an ankh? In a dream/visualization I was gifted by Anubis with an ankh.

In Kemeticism, the ankh is a symbol of life, and all gods carried them.

I associate black and gold with Bast, and I've heard green is a tradition color for Her as well. What tradition are you working with? I ask because you mentioned using the 5 elements (I'm assuming earth, water, air, fire, and spirit) which isn't Kemetic in origin. If you're taking a more Wiccan or broadly Neo-Pagan approach to your worship, the answers to your questions might differ than if you were, say, a Kemetic Reconstructionist.

I shall embrace the light. I shall weather the storm.
I shall endure.

Like others have been saying, black and gold work well, but I've been using white shrine cloths for a long time now for all sorts of gods and have never gotten any complaints.

Ankhs would be a good addition, too, along with anything that has traditionally been associated with the god in question.
Leave your darkness with me, and I will make you shine.

Oh I see, I'm not trying to take a wiccan approach at this I am trying to worship the 2 Egyptian god/goddess' I believe in. This is why I was asking. What do you mean by what tradition am I working with?

I love white as a colour, it is very pure. But I have a hard time finding one that suits my altar right now. I was also thinking about maybe adding replicas of the canopic jars? Thank you again Shine.

I meant to ask which religious context you were approaching Anubis and Bast through. The reason I asked was because you mentioned representing the five elements on your altar, which suggested that you might be using a Wiccan framework. Not that there's anything wrong with that, and you can worship these deities in a lot of different ways. I was just curious if you were using a particular framework, because different folks might approach the gods in different ways, and what works for a Wiccan won't work for all witches and what works for some witches won't work for all Reconstructionists, etc.

If you're interested, there's a relatively cheap set of the canopic jars on Amazon right now.

Oh I see well I approach them in casting a circle around us and talking to them through mind and words. So I suppose it is wiccan in some ways? My coven sister and I believed that my Egyptian Mau cat Bandit was a reincarnation of Bast because she lived so long and was always there to protect me.

Circle casting is more Wiccan in nature. Kemetic (Recons) generally don't do the circle casting thing, at least in worship contexts. Have you checked out the Reformed Kemeticism SIG on this board?

If you're looking for a traditional Kemetic script for worship, PM me and I'll send you one.

If you're doing this from a Kemetic (Ancient Egyptian) standpoint, the basic shrine arrangement is a candle, incense or essential oil, a bowl for water libations, a vessel for offerings and images or statues of the deities you're honoring.  You don't cast circles here, or call on quarters for ritual.

Tameran Wicca (Using Egyptian deities in a Wiccan framework) is different.
I am the Goddess of Who I can Become. I mix the magic of the sorceress with the blade of a warrior. I walk the liminal pathways to see the face of the Goddess, both terrible and kind. As She stares back at me, I tremble in awe and ecstasy.  --SatAset
