Can anyone tell me the significance of Coal
« on: February 09, 2012, 08:49:06 am »
I have a small collection of sea-washed coal I collected from an east coast beach in Scotland, over 20 years ago.  I collected them because I liked the feel and shape of them, and thought them attractive.  They have been used as an ornament for my fireplace all these years.

Since the start of the upheaval caused by an unknown "thing" which upset my daughter, my little dog persistently brings me one particular piece of coal.  She has never done this before, and I just want to know if there are any properties related to coal within the realms of witchcraft, or is my dog just being a dog.

I would be very interested in your thoughts.

I live in Appalachia and my father was a miner. I can tell you what I think about coal, to me it is a cool stone. It represent all the elements in my mind. It's formed by pieces of tree what became soaked in water then are pressed by the Earth; it's purpose is to produce a steady, hot fire or heat. I have a lump of local coal on my alter to represent fire.

It was hard for me to find magic uses for coal. What I did find was info on the stone, jet. It's a coal type rock and is used as a strong protection stone. I got the same information at most sites I checked for it.

Per this site: http://www.wicca.com/celtic/stones/stonef-j.htm They ward off evil, especially magical evil and lift fear and depression. They are a link between the physical and the spiritual and are used to balance the emotions. They protect from possession.

Being in the ocean your stones have been in salt, sun and moon light. They sound like great stones. I would consider making a necklace or charm bag for the one your dog favors and let you daughter wear it.

Thank you so much, I knew if I posted here, someone would be able to give me feedback.

I will look into making a charm bag for my daughter to keep in her handbag (the coal is highly polished - you can see your reflection in it - and about 3" wide, by 4" long and about 1/2" thick).

Again, thank you for taking the time to answer.
