Esbats
« on: August 15, 2017, 08:13:52 pm »
I'd like to ask, how do you guys celebrate Esbats?

I've been looking for a way of celebrating the Esbats in a similar way to the Sabbats - as in, having a specific theme for each one, or a full lunar calendar for Esbats - so I've been looking at different cultures' traditions for naming the moons.

Being from the UK, I've settled on the Celtic tree calendar, and it's been really helpful for engaging more strongly with each Esbat.  I'd really recommend this, if you're interested - 'cause each tree is full of significance, and it's a good source of inspiration for achieving goals throughout the year.

I know the Native Americans have a really interesting lunar calendar as well - and there's a lot about this online - but it's just not relevant for me, in the UK.

I'd like to know if any of you guys follow a similar tradition, and if so, what that tradition is - or how you celebrate with no set theme.

So I'm Buddhist, and I've taken lay vows. This means that I must observe certain rules of conduct. Among them in my particular tradition of Buddhism is abstention from meat and sexual activity on the full moon.

Just a heads up, the 'Tree Calender' is actually a modern invention (by Robert Graves I think, he made up a lot of stuff to be honest), the Ogham didn't actually have a calendar correspondence. There are agricultural names for the different moons that some of my friends are experimenting with, I believe some of those names also exist in the UK! You might find that helpful too  :)

I do divination on the full moon and new moon myself  :D

Though there's moments in every circle to commune with the gods and such, we reserve Esbats for more circle work,(divination, spell craft, e.t.c) than festivities usually done on Sabbats.

If you're wanting to incorporate themes, or ritual dramas into your own work, there are cultures that have lunar observations you can incorporate into your person practises for sure. There are prayers, and hyms to the moon in books like the Carmina Gadelica for example (in different phases) as one suggestion.

Last year my whole focus was on moons and working through a year of moon phases.  I have seen the named moons, and different versions of what each particular moon meant, so I started there, found the meanings that worked for me and went with them.  I did use mostly Native American names for the moons (but I am also in North America, so many of them are logistically appropriate for what is going on in my world at these times).

But really, the name wasn't so important to me as having a theme or key word for each moon and then working the cycle of phases through that keyword.  I found this to be really interesting, and I liked having that kind of focus.  Plus it was really cool to see the same phases from different angles throughout the year.  I wrote about each phase, which you can find here (WyldGarden, but I haven't made a master document yet, so you'd have to scroll back to last year and then scroll through the year's posts.
