Re: Why do some Wiccans and witches look down on Kitchen Witches?
Quote from: Ravaris;107442
As opposed to someone who tries to summon the elder gods? I understand that there are people who are drawn to magic but if this is the definition of low magic then high magic must be very dangerous.

Why must the opposite be more dangerous? Personally I think in the first place such a dichotomy is ridiculous because I can just as likely do "low magic" as "high magic" several days a week. But I don't think that's actually what Darkhawk is saying here.

I mean can you imagine what would happen if we divided prayer into low and high who's prayers are higher then others and why would such a thing even come about. Magic is magic isn't it?

I mean ... I don't know the exact reasoning behind the labels of high vs. low, but I don't think they came about because someone thought a Ceremonialist has his prayers reach higher than a kitchen witch's.

Re: hate and ''pagan''
The term ''pagan'' was created because of hate.

The term "pagan", in origin, just means "does not practice the orthodox religion of Rome".  It predates Christianity.

(A Nova Roma priest has commented on this, basically laughing at the fact that they were leading a ceremony at a pagan gathering when technically it could be argued that they were the only person present who, by definition, could not be pagan.  Though of course in the present day the orthodox religion of Rome is Catholicism.)

When you start with flawed premises - especially ones rooted in bad history and hostility to Christianity - you will get flawed conclusions.

Christians don't accept other gods, and people become ''pagans'' to oppose christianity.

If you believe that the purpose of paganism is oppositional it is going to be very difficult to form right relationship with the gods or other practitioners.  Opposing Christianity may be your idea of a fun hobby but it has nothing to do with pagan theology in the overwhelming majority of cases.  (And the explicitly counter-Christian Satanisms and other counter-Christian religions rarely wind up under the pagan movement umbrella, because they do not actually have common cause even if they have some similar influences in some cases.)

When christianity and paganism finally come to terms, we will see that these two great religions

Paganism is not a religion.

Paganism is a sociocultural movement that has produced and contains many different religions, with different theologies, different perspectives on the world, different goalstates.

Don't Christians have water baptism which is similar to pagan rituals?

Derived, like much of Christianity, from the Jewish practices that are its origins.  Judaism is not pagan.

Do you agree that these two religions should come to terms? I don't mean that they should change their beliefs, I just wish they can co-exist.

I cannot agree with any sentiment that claims they are two religions, because that is false to facts.

Besides, they already co-exist quite normally in my experience, and I see no reason to concoct a narrative that suggests otherwise.  it would only serve to create conflict where none is required.

Also I miss the former staffer who is a Catholic theologian quite a lot when these sorts of threads come up.
