Worship Without Altars
« on: December 05, 2011, 09:31:41 am »
Hi all.

I've been thinking about what I'm doing for my deities, and I've realised that I'm notoriously bad at holding rituals regularly, and even quite bad at organising for the big ones (Beltaine, Samhain, Oimelc...), and I was thinking about how I'd go about getting myself to work properly.

I began to think about what I *can* do - I'm quite good at memorising things, especially words, and I love the old mythology and stories, and I'm about to start learning the harp (as soon as I have the money to get one).  I thought, what if I practiced with these things - telling stories and playing songs for other people and my deities instead of or as well as performing rituals.

Does anyone else practice like this - with performance specifically, or with another, similar, activity?
The human brain is an amazing thing: it works twenty-four hours a day, every day from before we are born - except when we take exams.
If everything\'s under control, you\'re going too slowly.

I guess, maybe, you could consider it 'practicing' with other activities...

In an act of honor Hwt-Hrw, I perform magic. I cast spells and put together herb crafts. The biggest form of worship, I guess, would have to be all of the Tarot readings that I do. I often light a candle in her honor when I pull my cards out. She's also the Lady Who Owns The Magic Books. I will, also, light a candle or murmur words to her when I pull out books related to magic.

In regards to Sekhmet, I haven't really gotten hands-on in this fashion with her. I don't, in all honesty, know quite how to go about it. I recently started donating blood in her honor, but aside from that, I'm at a loss as to what else to do.

I think it's entirely possible.

For the past year I have been off duty, as it were. Out of shrine. Out ritual (at the behest of my god). However, I have no been out of service. Instead, I found other ways to honor him without sitting in front of a shrine. I don't necessarily think that performing rituals makes you more in touch with your god/s. More in touch with nature. Or even a better practitioner, per say. It's about feeling and what you do with that feeling. If sitting down and performing structured rituals isn't your thing, then find something else that speaks truer to you. If you feel that passing on stories and playing the harp speaks more to you and your gods- then go for it. Who is anyone else to say that it's an incorrect form of practice?

Similar Situation here.

Informal worship for me involves the Piano and spontaneous prayer. I see no reason for your deities to become angry with you or not hear you because you're not at your shrine.

But I don't know your deities as well as you do :P

Lately I've been learning and resreaching. Forming a personal relationship with Them by learning and coming to personal conclusions about them and what feels right. Also spontaneous convetsation over a lit candle sometimes, but mostly without.

Also, in honor to Them I've been spending some serious quality time with my young daughter (other than the normal play and whatnot). Shes five and just today we went to a local huge willow tree and collected fallen tokens so she could have a 'winter decoration' in her room.

I do writing in honor of my Goddess. That's not done at my altar, but at my desk. :P
