Thinking out loud--Valerie Worth rituals
« on: April 02, 2014, 10:10:31 am »
So I've been lurking on a lot of pagan blogs lately while trying to re-invigorate and re-assess what I'm doing, paganism-wise. I've been coming across a lot of discussions on belief vs. praxis and it's inspiring me to want more actual practice in my religion. I have a tendency to get into my own head and just stay there, spiritually, and "think" my religion instead of living it, if that makes any sense.

Some of this practice is going to be personal devotions to my specific gods and I think I have some ideas for how that's going to work out. But another thing I've decided I want to do is try out the Ceremonies for the Year in Valerie Worth's Crone's Book. I've had this book for ages, mind you. And I know she's supposed to have written it mainly as poetry rather than as something to be practiced. But the Gods' honest truth is that those rituals send a chill up my spine every time I read through them. And I've found myself reading through them a lot over the years. So basically, I think I'm going to do this book kind of like some people "cook through" famous cookbooks over the course of a year. I feel like there's something to be found there if I try it out.

I haven't worked out all the theological kinks yet. For example, one of the rites is obviously a Dionysian revel, but doesn't mention his name; I have a (small, budding) relationship with Dionysus and I feel like I'd get a more effective revel if I made sure he knew he was invited, so to speak, but another part of me wants to just try it as written. But that's in the fall, so I have time to figure it out. ;) ETA: There's also the question of cluttering up my ritual calendar at certain points where these rituals will fall around the same time as specific stuff I do for my deities.

But I did the New Moon in April one last night and it felt quite effective, and I also feel like I really got something out of the search for the items I needed for the ritual.

Anyway, I guess this isn't really a question, but more thinking out loud, since I don't have a lot of local pagan friends at the moment to bounce ideas off of. Also, wondering if anyone else has tried the rituals.
