Ritual and magical stuff you've been trying recently
« on: May 03, 2019, 06:48:51 pm »
What magical and/or ritual stuff have you been trying recently, and how has it been going for you?

(To whatever degree of detail you're comfortable with: I am a 'don't talk about magical specifics for a bit after doing, let contents settle from transit' sort of person, myself.)

Reasons why I'm curious and my own thing in a separate post.

So, I'm thinking about this because this morning I did the last rite for the Lunation Rite from Ivy at Circle Thrice.

Basically, it has you do a set ritual and make simple offerings (incense) to a deity or deities every day (including reciting a relevant Orphic hymn) and to the deity of the day (a candle), using the structure of the 29 lunar days from the Papyri Graecae Magicae (a historical magical text).

Ivy's adapted it so each day has a specific focus that is workable in a modern society (most of us, for example, are not really commonly trying to keep ships from sailing...) And you can expand it with additional ritual actions (I did sort of sigils, for values of sigils that include 'highly symbolic drawings') The adaptation and background is nicely thorough and helpful.

(For people looking for suitable short-term candles, I found using beeswax birthday candles worked great for 'I need to leave for work, I want this candle to burn for about 20 minutes and burn out'. I stuck them in metal cauldron full of sand.)

The actual ritual is a little outside my usual working zone (being a bit more on the ceremonial side than I usually run to), but I was interested in trying it because of the structure, and because of the discipline in doing something every day for basically a month. Now I'm at the last day, I'm a bit "Wait, what do I do tomorrow?"

(And being me, I go "Self, you are teaching Seeker class, and then going up to a laid back small community Beltane, there is not a lack of magic or ritual in your Saturday. Think about Sunday, okay?")

I've had some blocks break loose for me (including a good friend offering me a chance to make a bit of extra money in a really useful way for both of us unexpectedly, the day after learning I had three pricy and necessary car repairs...) and I'm curious to see how things carry forward.

I totally hear you about not wanting to talk about stuff until it 'settles'.

As of late, I've been exploring more of things like sigils in therapy. My therapist identifies as someone on the left-hand path. I'm pretty much on a similar path, so it works out. My actual therapy sometimes is supplemented by magical assignments. For instance, they taught me how to make a sigil in therapy to overcome the bindings of my past traumas and get past my social anxiety and other stuff that doesn't serve me along those lines. It has worked immensely. I've been crafting sigils with some trial and error. Made another one for banishing negative or malignant forces from my life as well. Seems to be melding with the energy of the first sigil and creating some kind of resonance.

My therapist is pretty level-headed, so it's a great balance of psychology and spirituality. One of my other assignments was selecting either the LBRP or one of the others they listed as a means to clear the air and create protection. Strangely enough, I typically do something way simpler and never really clicked with the LBRP or things like that. Eventually, I found one that clicked with me and ended giving that a go for a week. Tried variations of elements which created some very interesting effects. I typically try to simplify things as much as I can without affecting the original intention or potency. Though some things do not afford the ability to simplify. I'm still in the process of hammering out this particular ritual, so I'll reserve discussing it further until a later date. This has also led to a new deity showing up. They couldn't have come at a better time, their energies are perfect for what I'm doing as of late.

Additionally, I'm working on stuff from Quareia. My brain is kinda bratty and while it likes the structure, it feels like there's not much variation allowed. Therefore things are going a bit slowly with it. I'm still playing catch-up with my university courses, which doesn't help matters.

BTW I really like your site, Jenett. Given me a lot to think about and take into consideration.

I've been trying out sigils, too - in my case, specifically the type called the Spare method (which works by combining letters from a meaningful phrase). I also have a method of making sigils via magic squares which I might try for the next one.

Since I don't usually think in terms of magic for problem-solving, one of the hardest parts was coming up with a reason to make a sigil at all. The one I made was for home safety; it's working so far :P

I'm also trying to work down my to-read pile. I still have The Tao of Craft (also about sigil-like magic symbols) and a doorstop about Japanese religion waiting for me.

Well, I've been offering Puja in a more formalized way lately, and trying to introduce new powers into my practice. So far I feel it's been successful.
"The worshippers of the gods go to them; to the manes go the ancestor-worshippers; to the Deities who preside over the elements go their worshippers; My devotees come to Me." ... "Whichever devotee desires to adore whatever such Deity with faith, in all such votaries I make that particular faith unshakable. Endowed with that faith, a votary performs the worship of that particular deity and obtains the fruits thereof, these being granted by Me alone." - Sri Krishna
