May the 4th be with you: practices of the Jedi?
« on: May 04, 2018, 06:53:23 pm »
Since the date is apropos, here is a thread about the Jedi and/or Sith.

The Star Wars franchise has a lot to say about the philosophies of both groups, but what about their practices? I mean, we see bits of their teaching methods and martial arts, but what about religious practices? Are there any?

The Jedi are sometimes called a religion, but do they function as one?

What do you imagine Jedi spiritual practices would be like? How about the Sith?

I was a real-world Jedi for 5 years. The "religion" is usually referred to as "Jediism," "Jedi realism," or "Force realism."

There are multiple groups out there that teach the philosophical and "religious" underpinnings of the Jedi. There are also Sith groups out there too.

The real Jedi focus mostly on self-improvement, awareness of the moment, meditation, good works, charity, that kind of stuff. There are teachings that are mostly recommendations not dogmatic proclamations. It focuses on teaching a conglomeration of philosophies and emphasizes helping the world around you by improving oneself.

It's a rich and interesting system and if you're interested I could point you in the right direction to learn more.

So, a couple of years ago, I blogged about Jediism.  This is definitely from the perspective of someone from the outside, I have never been a follower of the Jedi way.

I think there are Jedi churches, and that they would take their doctrines and could talk about them and discuss them (like many people do, with the tenants of their beliefs) in religious services.

I don't know if there are Sith groups, though I am quite certain there are people who follow a Sith path (mainly because I know I've seen Sith creeds and other things shared before).

Personally, I could see working many of the tenants of Jediism into my practice (as I do, since my Path is one of fusion), but I really struggle with the 'no emotion' part of it.  And, since my own path is highly shadowy, I think I couldn't go pure Jedi.

There is no good, no evil.  The Jedi and the Sith function within one.  There is only the Force, it moves through every creature throughout the Galaxy.  The Gray walk a different path.

I was thinking more about the Jedi within the Star Wars universe when I wrote the OP. How does the real-world version compare to the movie version, would you say?

I noticed in your blog you wrote that you consider Jediism to be a philosophy rather than a religion. Would you say that Jediism (either the real-life version or the movie version) is more orthodoxic than orthopraxic?
