So, how reverent are you toward the gods? I tend to be pretty rude, but my god finds it funny so it's all good. What about you guys?

One of the reasons I found it easy to transition from my pagan practice in to high Anglicanism and Catholicism is that I was always pretty reverent as a pagan. I addressed the gods with titles instead of using their names casually, I'd bow to their shrines, make gestures like kissing my own hand if I passed statues of them in a museum or something, as well as my own representations of the gods at home.

I'm also pretty uncomfortable with being casual and overly familiar in a religious context, as I prefer more formality and reverence. A lot of that has carried over when I became more involved with Christianity.

I believe that the gods do not require worship but will do things for you if you don't worship.  I believe my Christian parents and Grandparents are going to same place I am Helheim, unless I die in battle or something and go to Valhalla, or I choose Diser.  I keep a calendar in my closet of all the holidays, mostly just the main ones like Yule, Midsummer, Winternachte, and Ostara etc etc.

However I cannot perform all the rituals I have to, since my parents do not know that I am a Pagan.  I told my mum and she stopped me within a second and said "I don't want to hear about any religion except that Jesus is up there and the devil is down there." So I can't burn a fire wheel on Yule, I can't set the dinner table for the gods, I can't give big gifts to the gods and I can't attend group Blots.  I have to pray and blot by myself.

In terms of casual vs. formal I usually refer to them by their names; Thor, Odin, Tyr, Frey, Njord, Eir, Freja etc. I usually like to see my gods as casual however, but then again they are gods and I believe I should still refer to them as such

A Reminder:
Hi, Cellogs,

We don't mind long posts here, but to avoid having a hard-to-read wall-o'-text, hitting "enter" twice every few lines adds some white space and makes it easier to follow - I've edited yours to add those breaks, but it's a really good habit to get into yourself.

They don't have to be the "proper" place for paragraph breaks (we're interested in readability more than technicalities), or a complete change of thought - some thoughts take a lot of lines and need to be broken up into sub-thoughts - as long as they're there.

This isn't a formal warning, just a reminder. No reply is necessary, but if you have questions or need clarification,  please feel free to contact a member of staff privately.

Thanks!

I try to be quite reverent and respectful but with honor and not worship as such. Its a fine line which I'm still feeling my way along. I just try to do what feels right. I always address the Gods and Goddesses with their full names. My Ancestors whom I knew personally I address as I did in life.

I think I'm fairly reverent, though there are times I talk to them a bit informally, i.e. as a friend or family member.

It also depends on what I'm trying to accomplish. Let's say, for example, that I lived next door to a U. S. Senator. There might be a lot of informal interaction, invitations to parties, jokes shared between friends. But if I seriously wanted him to introduce legislation on behalf of myself or parties I am concerned about, I would do well to don a suit and tie and make an appointment.

I understand the sentiment. I was always reverent when I practiced protestant Christianity, and I am actually even *more* reverent now; I was raised to fear God, and generally I do fear my gods, (especially the Goddesses.)

I do however occasional disrespect God/the Gods in moments of frustration or anger. I always apologize, and the shame actually makes me *more* careful about what I say next time around.

Endowed with that faith, a votary performs the worship of that particular deity and obtains the fruits thereof, these being granted by Me alone." - Sri Krishna

For me it depends on not only the setting but also the God/Goddess. I've found there are some that don't like casualty and others that are ambivalent or even prefer a more casual attitude.

While performing rituals I tend to be rather formal and reverent (with one or two exceptions based on the deity I'm primarily worshiping during the ritual), but outside of that I'm more relaxed. When simply talking to someone else about my Gods and beliefs I'm distinctly more casual and I've never found that my Gods are very concerned about that.
