If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

Laurelei Black wants to Build a Temple for Aphrodite

Here is the link to her gofundme page: http://www.gofundme.com/38qes0

I'd love to see more temples being built, but as I have no cash to spare, I'm trying to pass this around. Hopefully this will reach others who have some spare change.

Any idea where, as in general area, it will be?

The page says Monrovia, Indiana, I'm assuming that's where she's at, so the temple will be there....probably?

Yeah, guess that's not very specific, and 20K is a lot to ask from folks when the details aren't spelled out like that.

Very cool, I'd like to see what happens with this.

I like the idea, but I'm curious what her... well, business plan is. Does she already have property she's building it on? Is she running it by herself or on behalf of an organization? Etc etc.

On the one hand, I would love to see permanent shrines or temples built in this country. Public ones, where I could make cheaper journeys to than trekking over to Europe. (Though at some point I want to stand near the remaining foundation stones of the Argive Heraion just so I can shake my fist to the sky and say "I WROTE A FINAL PAPER ON YOU I HOPE YOU APPRECIATED IT". Because everyone picks the Parthenon to write about but no one picks a random collection of stones from a random ruined temple in the middle of the Argive Plane.)

On the other, I'm really leery of giving to a project sponsored by an individual rather than an established group with a history of managing money properly. It'd be different if, say, there were a team effort on behalf of a few different Pagan organizations to sponsor the creation of such a temple (and even more different if that temple were dedicated to multiple deities or could function as a pantheon-wide shrine).

With absolute respect to this woman (and to you Lokabrenna for posting this -- I hope it doesn't seem I'm jumping down your throat) there's not too much here to convince me this is more than this woman's personal devotional project. Not that that's not important -- not that I don't wish her success -- but I feel like if I wanted to honor Aphrodite, my money might be better spent giving to a domestic abuse hotline or raising awareness about body image issues or spending time being the best partner I can be to J.
Maker, though the darkness comes upon me,
I shall embrace the light. I shall weather the storm.
I shall endure.

I have to agree with this, at least mostly.

What is she already doing at the local level for holding open to the general pagan public Aphrodite rituals?  By local I mean something that would attract people willing to make such a commute at least once a week.

Does she have, or at least plan to have an organization that is at least in some way open to membership to the general pagan public.

Someone on Facebook asked her for more info, this is what came back:

"I have a space in mind for the Temple, but the land hasn't been purchased yet. I know some crowdfunding sites don't allow members to raise funds for land purchase, but I am waiting to hear back from GoFundMe regarding this. If I can, I will use some of the money raised to purchase the desired land. If not, I will be generating money in another way.

The Temple will be publicly accessible during set hours each day, as well as by prior arrangement. It will be open to the public, as well, during special events and ceremonies -- unless reserved for private use by a an individual or group (for instance, for a wedding ceremony)."

So it looks like she hasn't purchased the land, but it doesn't look like it's going to be something that's out of her house or anything.

I hope she can get building permits and whatnot, but I can't see this being built anytime soon.

Bold emphasis mine.  Sounds like she hasn't done the basic business plan yet.  I'd expect her to ask, and get a response from the funding site before posting asking for money if she still needs to raise money for a location.

Granted, crowd funding very well might take a lot longer than any given property would be on the market. yet I'd think she'd be able to raise the money based upon similar properties and have a business plan for paying off any mortgage, making sure there are enough paying attendees to keep the land, etc.
