Arts, Music and Crafts as worship/offerings
« on: April 07, 2012, 10:34:04 pm »
So, I'm a writer, photographer, and I crochet. I hope to get into painting soon. Now, I've heard plenty of how to use writing and painting and such to honor the gods, and I want to get into using my crochet for it too. I also want to know how you guys use your talents in the arts, crafts, music, and yes, even regular work and research, to honor your gods and goddesses! Also, feel free to share extra ideas too! Cooking counts as well :D

Awesome idea!
I draw, I don't paint as much as I used to, and I love love love cooking and knitting.

I do mostly digital art these days, I've got a folder full of sketches done after meditation or trying to recall images from dreams. Eventually I want to do some small devotional paintings, once I get a clearer image of the deities I'm honoring.

As for actual offerings, I give Belenos homemade ghee on the summer solstice. Making the ghee is one of my favorite cooking adventures, it takes rather a long time and is great for relaxing and getting into a calming mindset, in addition to making the kitchen smell fabulous! Not sure if this counts as a craft, but I'm trying to hone my tea-brewing skills as a way to honor Him. Something about the careful use of heat and water and the transforming leaves just clicks for me.

Liminal God (still doing a lot of research, haven't figured out exactly who He is, there are a lot of names floating around) seems to be pickier about offerings and wanting His own space, but I'm knitting a small stuffed ram as a votive object that'll be a permanent part of His shrine. The ram featured in a dream I had that was my first moment of "Aha! This is Somebody New." It doesn't have horns yet, but I will post a picture when it's done. :) I found the pattern HERE.

In my daily life I collect coins that I come across, spare change from traveling, mostly, and keep it in a tiny basket. When it's full I take the coins and put them in strategic areas around my work or my regular lunch route for people to take, or else I end up giving to folks who are short on change for the copier, etc. I'm not sure how much of that is what He wants me to do or just what I think would be a good way to honor Him, but I like feeding my own good fortune back into the system.

As cliche as it sounds, I think the gods will be fine with any work of art you give them as long as you put yourself into it. I imagine the worst haiku written from the heart would be much better received than a technically-perfect epic poem that you only wrote as an offering to them.

Of course, the ideal situation is to have skill AND feeling, as well as keeping the appropriate subjects/material in mind. Dedicating a war ballad to a plant/earth god probably isn't the best choice, no matter how much feeling you put into it.

I've never dedicated anything to the gods in particular, but I can feel when my performing/writing resonates with other people and that's when I know I did a good job.
On hiatus, but might pop in now and then. Just making it official.

My blog. 40% normal, 60% spiritual, 500% details.

Yes, I believe you're right. Anything that truly comes from the heart and from a place a true worship.

As for myself, I often sing, play a flute, or drum or chant as a form of artistic offering. Those are things I'm good at and love to do.  :)

I wore a shawl specifically designed and knit by me for my patron when I presented at Paganicon this year.

Honestly this could apply to art in general, it's so true. Technically perfect isn't always great if there's no heart behind it and lack of consideration for the person or deity receiving the item makes the point a bit moot. And most people will gladly receive the worst made gifts if it was the giver's most heartfelt try

I've been wanting to make my own god images for a while now (artist, here), and because two-dimensional works aren't nearly as "habitable" as free-standing sculptures, my idea was to get a bunch of 4 inch MUNNY figures and paint them kinda sorta in the tradition of the alejibres, kinda sorta my own style, and make them look like their animal aspects. Those would be for sticking on the altar~

Huh, I just realized I could also dedicate characters in my comic to them as well...

I've always loved crafting and art, and weaving (and sort of by extension knot-work) is one of my favorite things to do.  I tend to get ideas for woven or knotted pieces as worship art (making a wall hanging for knotted together as you would to make netting with various bits tied into it for whatever it is to represent:  could be seasonal, Deity related, or more tied to a more specific magical working).

I've worked quite a lot with what we used to call friendship bracelets when I was little (I think they are called something else now), but it is a form of knot-work.  I've made them in different patterns with or without additional beads or charms as spell or blessing bracelets.  Right now I'm on a devotional necklace kick, so am trying different ways to make devotional beads that I can use.

I am also brainstorming ideas of things to do with old crayons...just helped my son clean out things he doesn't want anymore, and ended up with two large containers of crayons.  I think I am going to try to main stained glass window ornaments from them.

I have, in the past, made chalk for use in ritual....that was fun, and is definitely something I enjoyed and has so much potential for customization.

Sounds like an awesome idea!

I used to cook a lot for them; I wouldn't offer them anything that I hadn't made myself, so if I wanted to offer something, I had to make a batch of biscuits.

At the moment, I'm learning to play the harp, so I'm dedicating my practise to them, and I'm trying to find songs as close to traditional Irish songs as I can.
I write all the time, and I'm dedicating my writing to them; I write novels, so the going is slower than a short story or poem, and it's not specifically about them, but I think they don't mind too much ;) .

I really should get back into sewing, too, but I think my schedule would slowly begin to choke me if I added anything else to it at the moment...
The human brain is an amazing thing: it works twenty-four hours a day, every day from before we are born - except when we take exams.
If everything\'s under control, you\'re going too slowly.

Disclaimer:  I don't worship gods or goddesses, but work with spirits of place, a.k.a. "the locals".

I've done carved fetishes, as well as items woven of pliable twigs (our red cedar drops a solid ton of these every year).  I also knit, crochet, and sew objects from plant fibers to burn.  I make food offerings on a regular basis.  Usually combos of homemade (often from my garden or land) and far-fetched (like a portion of a homemade entree with some Spanish wine--the locals don't get out much, so I figure it's nice to give them something from further afield).

I've also written poetry by hand, although not so much anymore.  I don't think the locals really understand language or why it's important, so I try to stick to the visually symbolic or nutritious.
