So I have a full house right now, with myself and my boyfriend (who get along rather well), his daughter, who is with us half the time, and my roommates and their newborn daughter.

The tension in the house mostly forms between the two families, and in large part centers on my female roommate (a close friend, but a rather difficult and temperamental person- we got along much better when we didn't live together!). She and her husband (also a good friend) just had their first baby two weeks ago.

The stress of dealing with a cantankerous (dare I say "bitchy"?) roommate wears me very thin, and I was hoping that I could design a spell to enhance the general peacefulness and sense of goodwill in my home.

I care about all of my housemates, and we are all friends, but sometimes grumpy and bitter behavior and some serious negative energy can overwhelm my experience at home. We all try to be respectful of each other, and obviously any spell would be paired with that. Any ideas or suggestions? I am very new to this but it feels like a very good place to begin.

Having lived in an apartment with difficult roommates before, I sympathize. Now, I'm not a spell-worker, but this is what I ended up doing:

-Clean. Clean out all the negative and pent-up energy. Besides, I'm sure there's no such thing as a too-clean house!
-Plants, crystals, candles...add natural(!) and pretty things around the house, to your diet, your daily routine like mediation and yoga, cook organic food. Just little things to encourage better relations, whatever works best in your experience.
-Seriously, try mediation, yoga, tai chi, grounding, exercise, whatever activity you like best. Take some "me" time!
-when it comes down to it, keep your bedroom sacred. Let it be the one place where you know there will be no drama, no bad energy...keep your door shut and the good energy in if need be.

Best of luck!

First of all. I'd recommend an airing of grievances between you first. It might be hormones with her or something could be bugging her and she's not forthcoming enough to say so. Wait until you're both in a receptive mood, make a cuppa and ask her if anything's bugging her particularly about the living arrangement. If she say's no, then you let her know how things are for you. She may not be aware that she's having a negative impact.

If you want to enhance this with spellwork, I can't see any harm in it. In designing a spell I always think about what my primary intention is. Is it to release my anger, is it to provide balance to a situation or is it to clear the air? Spells work better when you focus them on a single intention that's dominant rather than just saying I want all of this to go away kind of thing.

For releasing spells I like to burn, cut or somehow destroy the object with my negativity about the situation upon it. So I might write all my frustrations out on a piece of paper then burn it while holding the intention to let it all go. If I felt bound by something I might tie a ribbon then cut it feeling the ties that bind dissolve.

For balancing I would invoke the energy of earth, as imbalance is usually the result of being ungrounded or failing to acknowledge some important aspect. Earth energy is very constant, balancing and soothing. It's a wonderful energy when things get out of kilter. For that I might make an infusion and drink it or plant something in a pot and place it wherever balance seems to be lacking. The front door of a home is a great place to put a pot plant as it will filter energies as they come into the home and acts as a guardian to the home. You must care for it though. You could dig up some dirt from your yard, tell it all your woes then bury it again seeing the issue as now resolved.

For clearing work, incense and smudge sticks are wonderful. You can walk about your home allowing the purification to reach all corners while holding your intention for clear air. Breathwork likewise will help you dispel your cares and worries and fragrance of relevant plants can help you maintain a happier vibe about your situation. Citrus would be very good for that, pink grapefruit and orange.

I hope this helps.

First, thanks for the suggestions! I am rather new to actually DOING spellwork of any kind, so even the simplest suggestions are very welcome, and probably even necessary!

I think I may try some combination of thorough cleaning and incense smudging (and now is a perfect time, since the roommates are out of the house for the weekend) and trying adding a plant (and giving it a job to do!) to each of the two main rooms of the house.

I wish I could sit and talk to my roommate, but I have thought about this for a long time, and I think that what is best for our friendship, unless things escalate, is to simply give her space and try to cultivate my own peace.

I feel like I need to do something symbolic and spiritually empowered for my OWN balance, and so that I can remain a cool and friendly person, even when other people let their personal stresses get the better of them. Maybe I should work on my own empowerment, rather than trying to create a peaceful house! Because I don't know if I have the knowledge or ability to do that, whether through mundane or more magical ways. Regardless, I feel like no matter what precisely I choose to do, focusing my will on the subject with productive intentions can't possibly hurt.

Perhaps I should do something about both issues, but address them separately.

I appreciate the feedback and welcome others' thoughts as well!

I was talking with an initiate in my trad about basically this this past weekend and she suggested, for clearing the air in an overstressed house:

- sweep the floors, especially
a) the corners
b) any places where pet fur has clumped (she said pet fur can hold on to emotions, especially from people they're bonded with)

- smudge with sage (or, I assume, other appropriate cleansing smudging things; we use sage, juniper would probably also work just fine); this doesn't have to be heavy

- asperge with salt water or some other cleansing agent - just go around with a bowl of salt water or Florida water or whatever, dip your fingers into it, and flick it into the space, sending it into the spaces between everything as if you can send the water itself into the ether to wash up the stress

as our ashes turn to dust
we shine like stars    - Covenant, "Bullet"

Is there any real downside to using culinary sage instead of white sage for smudging? I say that because I have a great deal of home-grown dried culinary sage that could be used as a smudge, but it would be somewhat more difficult for me to procure white sage. Are all the sages appropriate for cleansing? (I know I could find information about this online, but I am curious about folks' personal opinion in the matter.)

Thank you for the tip about the pet hair, we have four cats (two from each family) and their black cat likes to rip out her thick black hair in tufts and leave them strewn around the house. Time to go on a fur-hunt!

Second this. During last months we have a lot of conflicts in my family and cleaning helps to resolve this tension. I put many efforts into cleaning windows and looking glasses - these are most important things. Yoga, reiki, chanting etc also helps to sooth atmosphere. Also, I like to use candles even without any magic implied just to make it cozy and warm.

Not Darkhawk, but I'll give you my two cents.

The only difference that I've noticed is the smell. I think white sage smells better when it's burned. Otherwise, I think they work pretty much the same.
