New Home Cleansing/Warding/etc

Hi.

My daughter and her boyfriend are moving into their very first home together in a couple of weeks.  This will be the first place she's lived other than our family home.

I'm looking for solid resources on cleansing new homes (this is an apartment, so it's had many tenants), setting up protections, etc.  I'd love to find a book to give her, but a good website would work, too.

Any recommendations?

Congrats to your daughter and her boyfriend for moving into their first home! One thing that I would suggest to do is turn up the pop music and clap and dance around the home. It's something I've personally done after my (negative) roommates moved out and it helped tremendously to cleanse the space of any stagnant energy. In lieu of this, one could also use  a chime or bell - both have properties with air/wind in cleansing the space. Another technique that I would recommend is to use essential oils of lemon, eucalyptus, mint, rosemary, cedar, frankincense, lavender, myrrh, and sage - or burn candles with any of these scents - to cleanse their house as well. One way to implement this is through physical cleaning of the entire home using lemon scented products (or other smells).

Personally, I would not burn sage, because, in my opinion, it's cultural appropriation of indigenous cultural practices - there are specific plants, and rites that go with smudging, and it's not something I would recommend.

Smoke cleansing is not just confined to one culture. It is/was common to the UK too although the herbs we traditionally use are different ( although sage, and any old sage at that, is now the default thanks to the internet!). 

I'd be using mugwort or a traditional witches whisk made of bramble.

My basic process and considerations (and I've always done apartment living). There's a couple of book recs at the bottom.

The things I always do:
1) Clean all the things physically (depending on how clean the place is at move in, this isn't a big effort, but going around with a broom and a damp cloth doesn't hurt.)

2) Do something energetically cleansing to the floors, door handles, and similar spaces (floor powder swept and vacuumed up, suitable sprays, etc.) and the space in general. What I use varies depending on the space and what I have handy, but salt water + a suitable essential oil or two and incense are common go-tos. (I like lavender and orange, but that's me.)

3) Make blessed water, and go around and do protective sigils (a pentagram is an easy one, but anything that's meaningful works) on all the doors and windows and any other plausible entry point to the home. (Note that in some lights, the salt water may reflect, so if you're not sure about people seeing, do them on the window frame.)

Then take more of the water, and pour it down anything that has a drain (toilets, sinks, shower/bath, etc.) A little will do.

4) Do things that make the space feel like mine - put on music I love and put out things that make the place feel like home. Ideally, cook something I like.

(I should note: this is not all I do. My permanent wards reside in a physical object, and there's part of my settling in that involves attuning those and setting them to do their thing, which is a more personal and hard to explain process.)

There is nothing wrong with smoke cleansing with sage. Smudging is something else that has become a buzz word. It is part of rituals only those that are trained in the indigenous cultures.  Smoke cleansing involving burning incense, and herbs has been practiced all over the world.

I would note that the friend who burned sage in my apartment is a person of native heritage.
