Need help to identify spell (and break it)
« on: January 20, 2019, 07:28:50 pm »
So last weekend me and my aunt were having a conversation, and she mentioned that our relative has thrown a coins to coffin of my grand grand mother( that relative was upset about my aunties and mom so she had a motive i suppose) and she did it silently (only one of my aunt saw it) , they said it was cursed coins that she threw, in my country there's no such tradition as throwing coins at coffins (if something we only put stuff in the coffin but thats pretty rare) , so thats what makes me think that it should be a curse hex or whatever it is , im new to this stuff , and i want to know what kind of magic can it be and what does throwing some old coins at coffin mean

Hello Rodiel and welcome to the Cauldron!

From what you've said above, I'm a bit puzzled by what you're referring to. There are documented customs, wherein you place coins in the deceased's mouth, or on their closed eyes, or in their coffin, to pay the toll for the Ferryman, or Charon, that come from archaeological evidence. (Source 1, Source 2). There are several other traditions as well that link back to placing items within or on top of the deceased's coffin or remains (see Source 1), however, these are more related to the passage of the soul to the Afterlife, or bringing wealth into the Afterlife. From what I have gathered so far... I haven't seen anything related to coins, coffins, and curses.

That isn't to say there isn't significance or meaning behind your question. I do want to know, though: why do you feel that there is a spell or that you need to break it? Are you sure that your relative's intention when placing the coins in the coffin was malicious? We'd need to clarify these questions before we move on.

well the reason we think so is that , she wanted a part in our house , but since my grand father gave her a house in city (two of them) my aunt denied the request, the woman got upset and left untill the funeral of my grand-grandmother, anyways , after that day familys luck started to go back, followed by my cousins death, my aunts sudden release from prestigeous job (with no reason) , constant breaking of stuff and need to fix it, and i know this all could be a coincidence but, still even if it's not a curse, i think the energy of fear is causing all of this, even tho woman was believed to be in witchcraft (or had a ties with people who were into it) so thats what my concern is and i want to know that is it possible that my and my familys thoughts to be true

While the luck failing could have many causes, it wouldn't hurt to establish some basic protections.

I would probably start by learning to set up a basic shield for yourself, then cleanse the place, and finally ward it.

Cleansing is a lot like ordinary cleaning, but may add an energetic intent.  Water is cleansing, as is salt.

If you want to do a smoke cleanse, the options vary across cultures:
- Frankincense has a long Christian history, if you or your family still practice.
- Dragon's Blood incense is another purifier
- Mugwort was burned in European pagan traditions.
- I do not recommend white sage, because it is endangered.  Also, unless you are indigenous or were taught Native ways, we settlers don't know the proper ceremonies.

Prayer is perhaps the simplest protection, building a relationship with a deity who would look out for you.

Salt and oil are protective, and could be physical components to a cleansing & warding.

Some herbs could be added, including ones you probably have in the kitchen spice rack.

Sometimes I have anchored my home ward to a physical object: a mug shaped like a house, a small quartz crystal.

EmberHearth listed a lot of potential routes to break a curse. This is a common type of magical practice around the world, so really there are dozens of methods available. My general advice is to look at all the suggestions and pick the one that feels like it fits best. (Kind of like shoes. Different styles work best for different people.)

For example, in my own path, the method I would use is to make a paper figure to represent the curse, and then burn it; either that, or make a clay one and smash it.

If you have a particular type of folklore you want to work with, or an idea of what kind of materials (if any) you want to use, let us know. That way, members here will be able to give you more specific suggestions.

The post Sefiru referred to is post #3 in this same thread.

While I'm posting, I also have an article on protection practices on my website - some of them don't apply to this situation, but many of them are adaptable to different uses/needs.
