Nausea, Pain, and Inflammation?
« on: December 15, 2011, 01:48:04 am »
I recently found out that I have endometriosis. The constant pain, swelling, and nausea associated are terrible to deal with on a regular basis and I've been missing more work than I can afford to.

I've found that sitting near burning sage helps to relieve the nausea some.

Are there any other safe and easy herbal remedies to assist with these symptoms.

The nausea is worsened by the birth control pills I was described to, hopefully, correct the hormonal imbalance.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I know someone on tumblr at http://livingwithendo.tumblr.com/. They also suffer from endo, and post a lot of tips as well as awareness for endo. If you look at the little question mark button on the top middle-to-right-hand side, you can leave them questions asking on how to deal with nausea.

First - don't know if your doctor's talked about this, but it is quite common for people to have side effects with hormonal medication. In a lot of cases, the side effects get better in a month or two. If there's persistent problems, there are lots of Pill brands out there, and many people respond much better to some of them than others.

But in the meantime: both ginger and peppermint are good for nausea. The ginger, you can make into tea, or nibble on pieces of candied ginger (handy because it's portable).

Peppermint is also an anti-spasmodic, and good for endo in other ways, so it might be a particularly good choice. In this case, tea's the more usual method. (It's good iced as well as hot.)

I had (have?) a pretty nasty case of endo for a couple of years as well (plus cysts). It eventually got so painful that I would be bed-ridden for upwards of 2 days whenever it hit. Unfortunately, I found absolutely nothing that helped; strong pain medications didn't even touch it. I was prescribed birth control to help prevent the endo from spreading (shit grows fast), and was told to not skip any days whatsoever because not having a period was the important part. If I did, the endo was more likely to grow, cysts were likely to form (and burst), and the endo would partake in the menses as well, shedding uterine tissue and blood into the abdominal cavity, which, as you probably know, is what causes the pain.

My personal recommendation would be to call your doctor and ask about taking the pill every day, or having them switch you over to a different brand if the side-effects are too much for you. Though in the end, the only thing that put a stop to all of it for me was going under the knife and getting the tissue surgically removed*.

As for home methods, I can't really help you much there... except for investing in a heating pad. It only takes a little bit of the edge off, but it's the difference between "unbearable" and "slightly unbearable", LOL.

*Just note that in more than half of the cases, not even surgery is a permanent fix, as the stuff has a tendency to grow back over the years. The only guaranteed stop is menopause. :\

I'll be checking that out immediately. Thanks for the link. :)

I think that seems like my likely choice. I've never had the taste buds for ginger. lol. I'm only 1 week into my second month of the birth control, but the nausea and overall lethargy seems to be getting increasingly worse.

I'll see how the peppermint and some daily vitamins help. Thanks!

I was in that same boat for the first 3 months until some good friends of mine came by and did a major healing session for me. Between the crystal they left with me and medical cannabis, I can keep the pain at an almost tolerable level most of the time.

A few doctors have recommended surgery, but I don't have any health insurance. There's just no way I'd ever be able to afford it. My mom had it for 10 years before she had the surgery and it went away until she got deployed to Iraq. The conditions there flared it back up and she had to have a hysterectomy.

Ugh. This is just such an awful disease. But thanks, everyone, for the tips. I'll be giving them a try.

Ugh, I am so sorry! I really hope you find something that works, because it's a horrible, horrible condition. At least it's almost completely benign...

I'm also going to recommend the disposable heating pads/patches like the kind ThermaCare makes to keep in your bag in the case that it flares up while you're out (they make sitting and standing a little more tolerable, so if you need to buy yourself time to get to your car or back to your house, it might grant you that). As for herbs, from what I gather Angelica might be good also. I have some that I make into a tea sometimes, but post-surgery I don't notice any effects it might be having. YMMV..

Good luck. <3

I've found that I do actually respond best to herbs. Breathing sage does amazing things for the nausea, so I'll definitely be picking up some Angelica Root.

My boyfriend has me stocked up on ThermaCare heating pads like we're in a winter apocalypse, haha. The help with my general discomfort.

Thanks so much, again. These are great tips. :)

I picked some up yesterday and had a cup of it last night and today. The taste wasn't unbearable, but not really pleasant either so I mixed it with a tiny bit of chamomile (much better flavor).

Maybe it was the chamomile doing this but, it relaxed all of my muscles and eased the cramping I was feeling at the time.

I'll see how it goes for about 2 weeks and hopefully it will turn out to be helpful.

Thanks again.
