Musical Magick
« on: October 25, 2015, 07:46:45 pm »
Hi everyone!  I wanted to ask if there are any of you here that use music as part of your rituals.  I always like to sing my spells and I feel very connected to the air and water spirits.  I just read on another thread that sounds can be used to cleanse a space and I love that idea.  Just today I tried using bells during a spell and it felt wonderful.  If you do anything like this, care to share? Thanks!

I love music. I don't sing, and I don't play any instruments, but given the choice I will choose to have music playing during ritual or spellwork rather than not.

When I was younger, I learned the LBRP by pairing it with a favourite track. To this day if I hear the song I start mentally doing the ritual.

Ringing bells is a traditional way to drive off spirits in number of cultures.

Sometimes I like to loop this and meditate to it:

The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

Yeah musick IS my ritual. To me it is not just another support, but rather THE way into a directive. Everything can be embedded within it. Everything can be delivered through it. Getting some experience on an instrument can absolutely enhance anything you do.

I find music to be crucial to doing so many things in my life with intent and purpose. I spend an inordinate amount of time creating playlists based on seasons (and sometimes moods) on Spotify! But I do love having music that evokes specific seasons for me as the seasons are very important to my practice. I usually use music as background noise to help me focus or evoke certain feelings and senses - generally, it's not front and center.

I love the idea of song spells as well and I am completely fascinated by people who can weave song spells well. I'm not one of them however.

Not having great musicality, I tend to stick to bells, drums, and flutes when I need sound for spells.  The few songs that I do use have either repetitive or chant-like quantity written without high notes because my vocal range is really limited.  For example, Cohen's "Who By Fire" is my Samhain invocation every year because it fits well and I can handle the notes in it without sounding like a teenage boy whose voice is breaking.

I do a lot of singing, and music has become a big part of any workings I do. I'm actually composing a devotional piece right now. If it ever gets finished I'll post a link to a PDF.

Same here. There are also  some songs that are such energy raisers for me that when I  hear them now they have the same effect that they did years ago. I get energized and riled up. :D:

I have songs that I listen to for the seasons, as well. I was listening to Tchaikovsky's Autumn Song and other related pieces the other day. I think it allows me to experience the season a different way. I have been in church choirs for a good portion of my life, and sometimes I will sing hymns before I enter into prayer/ritual (with words augmented, as needed.) I feel a connection to myself and Spirit when I sing, so it feels very natural to me.

Yes! I love this.  What instruments do you play?  I also feel this way about dance.

I think it's great that you're incorporating music into your craft even if you don't feel like you have great musicality.  I've always been musically inclined, but incorporating music into my practice has definitely made me better at it...giving me a venue to explore that aspect of myself in a spiritual way.

Yes yes this :D
Granted I do a lot of other things too, but music is a great love of mine. It was actually one of the reasons I started dabbling in magic - I would begin accidental 'journeys' when improvising on my recorder. In my world, playing music and doing spellwork is hardly even separate - all that makes the two a little different is keeping a destination in mind.

Everything can be played. Learning an instrument well enough to improvise on it, is a great investment in anyones practice - especially because it's impossible for other people to detect, unless you're singing spells with lyrics. You can do spells and rituals in plain sight, where other people can see and hear you, and no one's gonna be suspecting a thing! :D
Out in the woods, and I\'m not alone, but the sun\'s quickly going down!
There! In the trees! Something stalking me! Stop walking around!
\'K, just be cool, don\'t be such a fool! There is nothing at all to fear...
... other than the trees and the night and a beam of light, and the breathing in my ear...
[/I]

I have four bands I use in my spell work over and over again. I play them or use lyrics. I keep a book with all their songs in it with my other witchy books. I call them coven. ;)
