Chaos magic explained in less than 5 minutes
« on: December 06, 2014, 01:20:57 pm »
Since CM is under this topic header and I haven't seen any posts that addressed this...

My beliefs are my own.  I do not speak for anyone else.  It is my personal perspective.
I am not the Way or the Truth.  No Man or Woman can reach their God/dess through me.

When people ask me, "What give you the right to suggest standards for others?",
my answer is, "If I don\'t, someone else, perhaps less qualified, will."
History has proven that qualification is based on acceptance. The end justifies the means. - LaVey

I don't use Chaos magic. It just seems wrong to invoke Buffy and Bugs Bunny.

The mythology of the day, they are.

Bugs is a classic Trickster archetype in the vein of Coyote, Anansi, et al.

So don't use it. Plenty of others do and have lovely results.

Wrong as in morally reprehensible and therefore nobody should mention that they use Chaos magic? Or wrong as in ineffectual, so you personally do not use it?

Buffy can be the masque of a solar youth-goddess warrior-goddess type. I mean, come on, Buffy Summers. The strength and power of the solstice, right there in the name.

A Chaote could invoke Buffy or Bugs, if that seemed like it'd be effective, but there's nothing about Chaos Magic that says that one would have to invoke them or any other pop culture figures. (There's not much about Chaos Magic that says that one would have to do any particular thing.)

For a more direct/explicit/in-so-many-words explanation of Chaos Magic, see the Chaos Magic Primer in our article library.

My eldest sister actually follows an eclectic path of Wicca and Chaos Magick. And she called my path contradictory:) I wouldn't say I'm against the Chaos/Discordian path but I do think it takes a certain type of person to follow it. I'm twisted enough to combine Judeo-Christianity with witchcraft and Wiccan ideals but not enough to be a Chaos Mage:D:

Chaos Magic is not the same thing as Discordianism.

Beat me to it. I do understand the mistake though, since I once made it myself about a million years ago now - a dude working in an occult bookstore recommended Phil Hine to me (I was buying Jan Fries' Visual Magic) and I balked because I thought chaos = discord = awww shit. I didn't find out how wrong I was until a few years later when I found the old Barbelith forums on the internet.

Also, directed at the OP, a chaos magician is probably less likely to find your mixing of Christianity and Wicca problematic than most people, since they tend to be very open minded and of a "whatever works, works" mentality.

Nothing that says you'd have to as such.  But there's at least some expectation that chaotes will work with pop culture figures at least some of the time.  Internally as well as externally.

Although there's a strong assumption that one will change belief paradigms regularly. That it is possible to pick up a belief paradigm with a week or so's work.  That systems are entirely interchangeable.  That we should approach deity as archetypes and any differences there are merely cosmetic (Coyote is Dennis the Menace is Loki is Bugs Bunny).  That we should work sigil magick.  That chaos magick is a destination, not a starting point.  That dressing like it's still 1990 makes you the EXCITING FUTURE tm.

It's true that chaos magick doesn't have hard and fast rules per se.  But you sometimes have to squint pretty hard to tell the difference between those and chaos magick's implications.

(I really should get round to writing up that polemic at some point...)

This stuff is why I said a few years ago that I just wasn't doctrinaire enough to be a chaos magician. ;)
