ways of using herbs in your spells or rituals
« on: October 15, 2014, 08:38:52 am »
I'm curious how others use their dried herbs say for example in a regular spell involving the correct candles , incense for air , the correct stone and its properties for earth.
Personally I use spells to improve my way of life including my abilities and other things for the highest good.

When your spell requires the correct herbs (ie blue vervain , rosemerry etc..) depending on what you are doing, how do you add your herbs?  Personally as I make my candles for my spells I add all herbs needed inside the candle. I know this sounds novice however I've done it one way since 9 yrs old and now 31. Never asked nor looked how others do their thing ;)

I figure if it's burned, which I have done, does not last long enough but if you have some good ideas I'm open to hearing them :)

If I want to use herbs in a spell, I usually burn them as an incense or soak them in an oil to dress a candle. Though I don't keep a lot of dried herbs right now, so usually I just buy what I need for a project.

Depends on the spell. I did a spell to clearly define the boundaries of my home (had unwelcome visitors lately) and used rosemary as a protective herb. I cut sprigs of fresh rosemary, one for every opening in the home (doors and windows) and one for the front boundary. Since rosemary dries easily I left the sprigs whole, passed them through benzoin and frankincense smoke to remove negativity and then placed a sprig everywhere I wanted to restrict access. One above the front door, one of each windowsill, and finally dropped one on the front boundary.

I actually really like the herbs in the candle idea.

I tend to use my herbs as incense.

I have heard of that before and think it would feel more magical and put more energy into the spell. Normally I will burn them as incense, add them to the elements, spread them on the alter all over and add them to the water but have the water hot and drink it as a magical tea while doing the ritual, all depending on the type of spell.

Kinda off topic refering to dry herbs and the actual usage, I will add that in preparation of the ritual I will hold the intent of the spell in my mind while foraging the wild to find the herb. I will pay respect to the land spirit, state my intent to why I'm there, ask for permission, make an offer to the land spirit and ask for guidance on finding the herb. Then once I find the herb I will state my intent and the purpose that the plant would give to my spell and ask permission to take what I need. I ask the herb/plant to draw extra energy to help with my spell and when I feel everything is very powerful I gently pluck only what I need and give thanks. It really seems to give a huge boost to the spell, both by the plant and by the energy I put into gathering what I need.

I use non-poisonous herbs as infusions (herbal tea) in two different ways.

One alternative is to drink the herbal tea(s) corresponding to your purpose for one day, three days or nine days before the ritual, often combined with meals of food correponding to the same purpose, as a preparation for ritual.

Another alternative is to fast during 12-24 hours before the ritual, make the herbal tea (and/or the food) into talismans corresponding to your purpose, and then digest these talismans. This does only apply if the purpose is to increase positive personal character traits.

Please, assure yourself that the herbs you are using in this way really are non-poisonous.

Blessings Mikefarley001,

I’ve always liked using herbs in candles. Here are some other ways I've used Herbs.

  • Hang them up around the house – especially borders and windows
  • Smudging
  • Making ritual tea to drink and offer libations
  • When working with paper sigils I will place Herbs in my homemade paper that correspond with my intention.
  • Burning on coals, especially when working with particular blends
  • Smoking
  • Making ritual oils and magical tinctures
  • As a material to meditate with

All these actions of course are for the intention of connecting with an energy, inviting an energy into my Life, banishing energies, or aligning myself with a particular energetic vibration.

Blessings Be,
Yogi Suba

Depends what I am doing. I may burn them, I may make a tea of them or potion. I do a lot of jar spells. With those I just toss them in.
