If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

Increasing spiritual sensitivity & effectiveness as a magician
« on: October 08, 2018, 02:57:24 am »
So at this point I'm not exactly a novice magician anymore, and my spiritual practice is pretty solid in a lot of ways. Unfortunately, as I try to both deepen my practice and make my magic more effective, I continue to run up against a roadblock: I have never been very sensitive spiritually, and in the past the only thing that allowed me to break through to the Divine was mind-altering substances. That's no longer as tenable as it once was for various reasons, and I need to find other ways of communicating with my Powers and perceiving the spiritual world around me.

I know that this sort of thing is as much a skill as it is a talent, so I'm not inclined to give up. In short: how do I train my psyche to improve this skill?

I've never been in the camp of needing substances for that, so perhaps this won't be as useful to you.  But things I do that may help:
Try playing games with your intuition.  Literally.  I used to use Minesweeper and Solitaire for this from a pretty young age, and I think that might have helped.

I assume you already know how to meditate effectively for yourself,  and that's usually a helpful practice for when I do have an unwanted bout of closing off.

Also, for intensity, try dancing, if you are able.  AFAIK,  this has been a way for people to connect with the spirit world in almost every culture that does so, including some Christian sects.  I know your main Power is a musician so you might already do this, but I have noticed that many people who like music a lot more than I do still don't seem to even think about actually dancing to it.

Also, while having a readymade set of music strongly associated with your deity may be in some ways helpful, I have to say that trying to find music that was mutually resonant without being cluttered with other strong associations was something of a bonding experience between me and mine ( BTW it's nice when you post here as we're on a somewhat similar path with a different person), and I personally find that if I've been using the same music too much it becomes temporarily stale and I need
to switch it up a bit.

I'm not as deep into Magic/Energy Direction as I used to be. But I've retained the state of mind related to the practice as it is a fantastic meditative state. When Deity deigned to commune with me it happened mostly through dreams, and a form of modified meditation was a great way to reflect on those dreams and find out "What the f**k do They want from me this time??"

I know its not always possible for everyone, but if you have a hard time clearing your mind completely (like myself) you can always focus on a specific thing (say your Deity's chosen manifestation, or a question you need them to answer?), or get some basic drum beats and write out something to chant while focusing mainly on the words (no magical intent required; just you, your brainmeats, a simple mantra/poem improvised or pre-planned and music that sounds like a heartbeat).

If you do go this way, it is a good idea to write in a Dream/Meditation Journal as soon as your set time in Meditation is up; so you can come back in a clearer, more top-conscious mind and look at what the messages could be. Sub-conscious is great for receiving messages but not-so-great for decoding them.

I actually used to do this all the time as a kid, but it hadn't occurred to me to use it this way. That's an interesting idea.

I'm not great at meditation, but I've been trying to learn.

You also have a good point here! I'm not much of a dancer, but it is historically a big part of a lot of different bits of my path, so it might be worth looking into.

I did a lot of looking for playlists for my Powers before the revelation of their mortal manifestation, and I've fallen out of that habit since. I've been meaning to expand my horizons again...

It's very rare for me to get that kind of dream--in fact, I don't usually remember my dreams. This may be due to the medications I take, or it might just be that dreams aren't the way to go for me. I'd be interested in whether there are any methods for improving one's dream recall.

I improved my dream recall by writing in a dream journal every morning after waking up. Even if I couldn't remember anything I would write an entry to record how I felt when I woke up and to note that I didn't remember any details. Sometimes the details came to me as I was brushing my teeth or during the day. But the act of TRYING to remember is what honed my recall :)

Drum beats might be a good idea; I've thought of mixing together some meditative background music in the past.

I stumbled on the site myNoise, which has a wide range of different sound options (some of it's white noise, some pink noise, some melodic tracks) which has an interesting animation feature where it will slowly migrate the balance of layers through different settings (so you get variation.) There are options like binaural tracks, natural sounds, etc. too.

You can use it for free, very very modest donation unlocks everything, including being able to layer different sets over each other. (I put in $5 about a month ago, and I'm still at the top layer of support possible), and there's a phone app version (which is a different payment system, but you can just pay for what you want.)
