Goetic symbolism
« on: November 25, 2011, 12:37:52 pm »
I'm working on a series of illustrations based on minerals that I'm, for lack of a better word, anthropomorphizing. Though really I'm interested in creating my own set of attributions and correspondences based on the mineral and the creature/spirit I come up with, sort of like creating a long series of personified humors and temperaments.

So after giving myself this goal, I realized that there is another work that achieves a similar aim. Namely, The Goetia and The Lesser Key of Solomon, especially considering that I want to create a seal for every spirit. So, flipping through my copy, I went about trying to study the symbolism present in the seals, but beyond the name inscribed around the circumference of the seal, and the repeating of some basic motifs like circles, triangles, crosses, and the occasional crescent moon shape, I can't really figure them out much. I mean, there's clearly a format that's being very closely followed, but I can't figure out if the lines and squiggles have any literal meaning beyond the stimulation of some part of the brain.

So I guess what I'm asking is... does anyone have any links or books they could point me to that breaks down the symbolism present in the seals and diagrams in this text? And more specifically, why the spirits have the seals that they do or where they came from? And really, any thoughts at all about this project or ideas on sources you might see as relevant would be fantastic.

Thanks in advance!

PS- hope I put this in the right place. :P

I've never seen any -- and I suspect any such that might be out there are simply someone's opinion without a lot of evidence to support it being "the truth". That said, if you take a look at books and sites on talisman magic you will discover several methods for making somewhat similar symbols.

Oh duh... derp. Haha, thanks for pointing out the obvious to me!

Though really, I'm only half interested in them from an occult perspective. Unfortunately, I guess the other half being academic about this sort of very specific thing is kind of pointless. :P

Thanks again, though~

Not pointless, perhaps, but I simply have never seen anything (that wasn't modern thought) on this subject.
