"The Woman Magician" and Sisters of Seshat
« on: September 11, 2011, 01:14:43 pm »
I just found a book entitled The Woman Magician: Revisioning Western Metaphysics from a Woman's Perspective and Experience by Brandy Williams:

http://www.amazon.com/Woman-Magician-Revisioning-Metaphysics-Perspective/dp/0738727245/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1315761180&sr=8-1

Apparently, the author has started an all-woman (defining "woman" as "anyone who calls herself a woman") initiatory magical order called Sisters of Seshat, see their website here: http://sistersofseshat.com/

I am thinking about picking up the book, because I was never really interested in ceremonial magic because it seemed so androcentric. If anyone's read the book, care to give feedback? The author's "creds" look solid from what I've read so far, but as I've said, I'm woefully out of date regarding the Western Mystery Tradition.

I haven't read the book (yet - definitely looks interesting), but I've met the author and heard her speak. She's definitely worth listening to. She also edited an anthology earlier called "Women's Voices in Magic".

I haven't read the book, but the author is knowledgeable in the CM field, so it is probably worth reading.

I have just finished reading this book. I bought it after reading this forum(thank you) and found the title curious, as a feminist I always thought the Mystic Qabalah was a bit sexist: to associate the negative side of the Tree of Life with all things feminine. I wanted to rewrite the Tree for my own practice but since I am not a ceremonial magician I just left well enough alone and hoped most male magicians today don't place sexist connotations onto old mystical beliefs.

I loved this book because it explains how to practice magick with equality for both sexes. Instead of viewing the Tree of Life in a sexist context, Williams is bold and intelligent. She knows what most woman practioners have intuited about the Qabala. She fits the needs of modern magicians by rewriting former sexist language and connotations of the Tree of Life. It is about feminism and equality, not just magick or female empowerment. This is an important book for all who are interested in magick, and women's issues practicing traditional male conceptions of widom and magick.
