Tarot Readings - Intuitive or By-the-Book?
« on: July 27, 2011, 11:09:02 pm »
I was curious about how others do their readings.

Personally I've never been able to abide by the books verbatim. I am always guided to energies while I am reading the Tarot. There has been multiple times when I begin a Tarot reading and request for a personal item to hold onto or am taken by surprise when I begin seeing things with my third eye that I have no way of knowing.

I use the cards mostly as a channel and visual aids.

What about you? How do you do your readings?

I have been using the book mostly, sometimes I get a different feeling than what it says and I go with that. I think eventually I will be able to do it intuitively at least for the most part.

My friend and spirit sister Kinkou told me to 'listen to them' and so I always have. Then again I have only one deck, one that came with many things it didn't like.. I found out from the same friend that the cards didn't like it because basically the book and the 'fairy greeting' that came with the cards where all fluffy things and basically not so good. Even the meanings that came with the cards in its book where basically fluffy and it didn't come with the reverse meanings to the cards. After I learned all these things it felt less like the cards picked me and more like they where screaming for anyone to help them from all the fluffy stuff >>; I haven't done many readings but so far I have been told by each person I've done a reading for with my cards that they are very accurate (and I use a website for the cards meanings). But I can't really do 'by the book' really because the book my cards came with.. wasn't really as useful as I had been hoping.. ^^;

I like to read the books. With different decks, the interpretations are interesting to me. I compare them and compare with my own. I try to get to know a deck by making my own little white book on them from what I see in each card.

That being said, I don't use them for readings, even my own version, unless I have to end one quickly for some reason or I am unclear on something.

I do as you do mostly. Visual aides.

Oh yeah I also use them sometimes if there are too many people around during a reading. It helps me refocus. I dislike getting the book out, and I explain why I am doing it when I do which isn't often. I've memorized most of my decks, but even feeling like I need to go to memory lets me know that something is amiss in my noggin.

The person who taught me to read the cards taught me the intuitive way. In fact I did not have a book for two years. I do use the book but only if I want to look and see how diffrent the interpitation is.

I was fortunate to find a very good psychic here in Denver that taught a great class on reading.  Basically he taught us the meanings of the cards, but that it was more important to be intuitive about what you got - sometimes it was the number on the card, other times it was what the picture seemed to "say" - it all depends on what pops out into your mind and what seems to make sense of the reading.  I use the Thoth tarot deck, and there is a lot to each card.  So to answer your question: it's kind of a mixture of both what the card represents and what your impressions are.

One key point is to go with what you read from the cards and not what the reaction of the person you are reading for.  The reason for this is to help you avoid accidentally "cold reading" for them - meaning just trying into how the client responds, this way you are less likely to just tell them what they want to hear, and not what you are getting from the cards.

I have never read for anyone else and I am still learning so I tend to stick to the book at the moment. Sometimes though I will get intuition about a particular card and I tend to go with that rather than with the book meaning

As I'm not really psychic, I tend you use "book meanings" tempered by my experience with the symbols on the cards and card groupings.

I use both, depending on the deck. Right now I just do practice readings on characters that my friends have created for play-by-post RPGs (and they've been SCARILY accurate) and when I did a reading with my Tarot of Vampyres I listened to what my "gut" had to say, looked at the card in relation to the other cards, and THEN I looked it up in the book.

When it comes to book versus intuition it's definitely 'six of one and half a dozen of the other' for me. I'm aware of the accepted meaning of each card but I also have associations I've attached to the cards over time and other things I believe they tend to stand for. (Just to throw in a random example, I've always imagined that part of the Six of Sword's meaning is about having to return to painful memories in order to achieve a positive result, which in turn leads to images of therapy, reassessing priorities, family funerals etc, even though I have never read anywhere that it corresponds with any of that.)

On top of all that, every reader has to trust intuition to an extent because varying positions for the cards mean that the meaning alone is not helpful to the querent without a time frame or direction attached to it and to give that you need to go with your gut. I can't count the amount of times I've read a card a certain way for a querent knowing full well in my mind that there is another potential way it could be interpreted.. But I just have to go with what's coming through strongest.

(Additionally, I've read in a few different work books that it's helpful, before reading any meanings, to just go through all of the cards and write down your first impressions and feelings about each one. I think that forming a relationship with the Tarot does mean having to go with your instincts, but not 100% - I maintain that study of accepted meanings is also important.)

I still use books quite a bit, mostly because no matter how I try some of the cards I just can never remember their meaning. I also like looking at different books, different interpretations and then combining them to see what really comes out. Usually before going to book I look at the cards, see what I personally get from them and then write it down and compare what I got with what might be written about it. It can be a bit long winded but I've always gotten great results from doing it this way.

For me, it's kind of a bit of both.  The little white book for my favourite deck feels a bit 'off', so I've gone to a site that's been recommended by others here.  From this site, I've got a general feeling for each card.  Now it's just allowing myself to open up enough and listen to what I'm being told (hard enough at the best of times, that!-listening to what I'm being told!) :/  I suppose it's a matter of 'Trust' in one's intuition that'll help in  getting a good/decent reading (just my opinion, anyway).

I use the book that comes with the tarot cards. However even though I have three decks with books to them I only use one book for all three deck. And the reason is that I can connect to the card and their meaning with that one book. All the other seems not right.

My roommate is very "by the book" but I'm the intuitive/visual aid person. I like to read the books and get different interpretations but when it comes down to it, my instincts are usually correct.

This.  I mainly read with Lenormand cards these days, where there's only 36 cards to a deck so meanings are much broader and there's more interpretation and 'what do these cards mean *together*' involved.  Sometimes I'll 'get' things that don't really reflect the official meanings of the cards at all... and that's usually the point where the querent goes 'ah!  yes!'.  :)
