Tarot -- Out of Character Deck Purchases?
« on: June 19, 2012, 09:16:48 pm »
My most recent addition to my tarot/oracle deck collection is the Motherpeace Tarot. I found it in a local New Age store and it was like it just grabbed me and was like: "YOU! TAKE ME HOME!"

I'm sure many of us have had these moments (not just with decks, I've heard the same sort of thing about witch tools) but while I can say I've felt drawn to decks, this is the first one that really grabbed me by the shoulders and started shaking. It's really odd, because before I saw the deck in person, I a) didn't like the art (thought it was kind of....crude) b) wasn't sure about round decks, and c) didn't think I could relate to the "women's spirituality" thing anymore (complete with outdated scholarship).

And yet, here I am with not only a Motherpeace deck, but the book Motherpeace: A Way to the Goddess Through Myth, Art, and Tarot as a sort of companion book. I did a deck interview spread, and was basically told "Yes, I know you have issues with me, but keep an open mind and we'll go far."

Does anyone else have a story to share about a deck that just insisted on coming home with you no matter what?

Yes, recently but it didn't stay with me for long.  A local man (into Sufism the last I spoke to him) has finally published an oracle deck he's been working on for years apparently, and they sell it in the local shop.

It surprised me that I would be drawn to it because I was skittish about the man himself, but the deck and book were wonderful to skim. Bought it solely based on the feeling and didn't even look at the title and only know the author's first name.

I took it to a friend's house the same day I bought it, so we might investigate it a bit together and she loved all over it. So I gave it to her. She doesn't get out much anymore with a toddler bopping about and I thought that was why her reaction to it was so excited. However, it's sticking around as she's texted me about what it has told her a couple of times already.

Maybe it was meant for her (but I'm still saving for another one and then I will have a pic or at least a title :ashamed:). Her previous go-to deck was the Motherpeace deck coincidentally. She prefers it to all of mine because "it's nicer and there's magnificent bush!" Oh we have giggled ourselves silly with that deck, but it has tended to say the same things as other decks about the same issues but in a much kinder way. Until I got the Goddess tarot, I used to go over to her for a reading after my Flemish deck thwacked me with the sternness, so I could find something productive in the message more quickly. It was my deck check for long time that way.

I have a Rider-Waite-Smith deck. It called to me from about half a mile away.  It lead me to a magic/new age/pagan store, that I had passed many times.

This lead to a discussion with my then girlfriend, that one should not buy their own deck, but be given one.

Over the years my deck has not allowed me to find it, then it would say come find me, after a while it would hide again.  Currently it wants me to find it.

Oh yes, the "bush" thing! That brings to mind a comparison with my Mythical Goddess Tarot, which also has a fair amount of nudity but is more focused on the breasts. I think that might be why I prefer that method to the way the Motherpeace lets it all hang out. I think if I were to compare the two, the Motherpeace reminds me of a series of cave paintings, whereas the Mythical Goddess has more of an "agrarian" feel (and the Gaian Tarot is very modern). So, to use terminology coined by the late Isaac Bonewits, the three decks are paleopagan, mesopagan, and neopagan respectively.

Not cards, no, but I had that "oi, you, take me home" thing happen with a massive sodalite ball when I was at a crystal fair once...  so I do know where you are comming from..

and I do collect Tarot... I've about 16 kinds now...

so I would say never say never  ;)  and if I do, I'll be sure to come back to this thread and tell you all about it   :)
It\'s all about the Ebb and Flow...

For the past months I've been passing by The Shadowscapes tarot in my local Barnes and Noble, always wanting to look through it and always drawn to it. I only saw the cover of the box, but never had enough to get it, even though by the third or fourth time I was browsing around the store I was aching all over to get it.
Then I saw it online for like... $10-15 cheaper, and bought it. I've never been happier with the look, feel, and results of a tarot deck. I also got this fantabulastic book called Tarot 101, it's great. Some books I get to learn more about myself, and some I get to learn about the subject.... this book does both for me. And it has a cool way of doing exercises to teach you the tarot.
But Shadowscapes tarot is just beautiful, imo.

I've never made OUT OF CHARACTER purchases before, but I found my Arthurian deck in a used bookstore and it gave me the "big sad puppy-dog eyes" vibe. Even more so when I put it under my pillow; I was intending to leave it there for a week, but after three days it started screaming "REEEEEEAD US, PLEEEEEEEASE."

Its old owner didn't use it very much, considering how many times it went "WE CAN TOTALLY HELP YOU WITH THAT THING YOU'RE CONFUSED ABOUT" and then their answer was "...Okay, you need to sort it out by yourself. Sorry."

It's a lot easier to work with than my Cachet deck, both physically and spiritually. My Cachet gave me tons of blunt answers and it was really high-maintenance, being intended as a gift deck. It's perfectly fine sitting around in my book cupboard now.
On hiatus, but might pop in now and then. Just making it official.

My blog. 40% normal, 60% spiritual, 500% details.

You have the times covered! Cave paintings is an apt descriptor of that deck, I agree.

I used to have the Pomo tarot, but I couldn't get used the idea of guns for swords or televisions for staves. I think it was the staves. Gave that one away. Also gave away the Aquarian tarot and a couple of others. I am not a collector precisely. I just keep the ones that resonate with me.

So I guess sometimes they can scream "Take me home!" and when they get home, they look about and scream, "Get me outta here!" Ha!
