Tarot Newbie
« on: December 13, 2017, 07:25:30 am »
Hello!  :)

I have been learning and practicing tarot; the meanings and the spreads available and have been making progress daily. However, I am not sure is that the same as my skills getting better. As much as I remember the meanings and spreads, how can I improve my intuition and accuracy when it comes to reading tarots?

Any help is much appreciated.

Practice! Practice in all kinds of situations. Doing readings for other people (or for situations that you don't know all the details for) is also really helpful.

For example, you can try doing readings around current news stories, upcoming elections or political decisions, or other things that will have an eventual announced outcome (so you can compare to your reading) but where you don't know what the outcome will be at the time of the reading.

For improving intuition, sometimes just paying attention to it (in a variety of settings) will improve it. Keeping a simple journal of times that you have an intuitive moment (including things like planned readings, but just also 'wait, I feel this thing') can help you see patterns and will just generally tell your subconscious that this is a thing that matters to you, which tends to improve doing it.

As far as the tarot goes, practice practice practice!  That's really the only way to improve that skill.  Have you tried reading runes, or oracle cards?  Keep in mind that some people don't feel any particular connection with the tarot (or any of the others).  So if you don't feel that connection, then your readings will be less accurate.  Personally, I feel no connection what so ever with oracle cards.  Whenever I try to read oracle cards, it's hit and miss.

For intuition in general, I find the following exercise helpful.  Go to a public place, somewhere you'd normally shop or interact with so you're comfortable going.  Somewhere like the mall or Books a Million is useful.  Allow yourself to be free of a preset goal, or something you're aiming to shop for, etc.  Then allow your intuition to take over and follow where ever it goes.  It might lead you to a book that you've been needing, or to someone you need to help, etc.  Just trust and do.

I haven't tried runes or oracle cards. I am fairly new to tarot as well, so I don't wanna eat more than I could swallow. I, personally, am more drawn to tarot cards than the other two. :) Thank you for your suggestions.

Practice practice practice!  That's really the best advice I can offer.  Once you get familiar with the cards and their inherit meanings, it's easier to interpret them together.  Personally, I drew the death card this morning, but that isn't really a surprise to me.  I don't usually draw a daily tarot (usually opting for a 3 way spread instead).  But when I do, the death card tends to make itself known quite a bit.  If I drew a card daily, every day for a week, I am almost willing to place money that on 6/7 of those days, the death card would be drawn.

Edit: I wanted to add that while the cards have "inherit" meanings, it's more guidelines and suggestions than anything.  Reading the cards in intuitive.  It's your intuition that will always light the way.  And ultimately learning to trust it will take you far, even outside of the tarot.

Hello!  :)

As much as I remember the meanings and spreads, how can I improve my intuition and accuracy when it comes to reading tarots?

I can share with you an exercise I did a while back, it takes some dedication to do (I didn't make it all the way through the deck myself) but I had some significant improvement in reading cards after a few weeks. I used the standard Rider-Waite-Smith deck because it's the one most commonly used and referenced.

Start your day by drawing a card at random. Take about 5 minutes to study the card, and think about what the images mean to you (do NOT look up the meaning in a tarot book at this point!). Once you have a general impression of what you think the card is saying, write that down in a journal. The whole process should take no more than 10 minutes.

Then, at the end of the day go back, read what you wrote, and reflect on what you think happened that day in your life that fits the meaning of the card. It is at this point that you can look up some of the card meanings in books if you like, and see if your impression of the card matches what others have written about it. Don't take the book meanings as gospel though- remember the whole point of this is to make connections between the intuitive impressions you got in the morning and what actually happened at the end of the day. You won't always get those connections, especially at first, but as time goes on and you keep at the practice it should happen more and more often that you do get connections.

After a while you can then do this same exercise, but instead of simply passively receiving the message of the card and going back to compare, you can start actively asking what themes or messages you need to be watching for that day. Or start moving into small, simple spreads in the morning to start thinking about how the cards interrelate to each other; I like to use a three-card spread where the cards are current situation, obstacles, and advice. It's also at this point that doing small spreads for your friends can help as well, to better refine that intuitive skill on people outside of yourself.

When I started Tarot, I just jumped right in! I found a Deck that spoke to me, did an introductory spread and we've been in a good, love-hate relationship since.

You and your cards will find a groove that works for you. I have a friend who does not read reversals and her cards respect that. You'll get better as you go and because each deck has it's own personality, it's hard to prepare. My deck is extremely sassy towards me and doesn't like to beat around the bush, especially if it's two separate readings for the same issue because I  (Or the person I'm reading for) didn't listen the first time.

I found the app "Golden eye Tarot" is helpful for straight forward meanings of the cards, it does reversals as well.

That is a pretty cool app, I agree.

With tarot specifically, learning your deck well goes a long way toward intuition because it allows certain meanings to jump out more at you. So I wouldn't undersell studying the meanings and the progress you've made there. All those meanings are a tool for your intuition to use to help guide you. It's almost like you're teaching it a language.

I would echo others who say practice as much as you can. Especially in reading for other people. While confirmation bias does exist, people will generally let you know how close they feel you got. Getting it wrong is just as useful as getting it right. Pay attention to how your intuition manifests - is it a gut feeling/knowing? do you get impressions/pictures/sounds? do you get any physical/emotional sensations?

And non-tarot activities can be just as useful for honing that skill. Paying attention to when and how your intuition lets you know information as you go about your daily life can be very useful. Meeting new people has been one of the ways I've honed mine.

I wish you luck!
