Mystic Faerie Tarot review?
« on: September 07, 2014, 08:11:22 pm »
So after my DivEx the other day/week, I've started working with my tarot cards again. It's the only deck I have, but the Mystic Faerie deck is starting to grow on me more than it ever has. I'm not sure if that's because I'm more... advanced in my spirituality than I was when I first bought them, or if it's something else, but I'm really starting to like and get the hang of tarot reading. At least reading for myself.

I did a general "show meh yo personality" shuffle, and pulled random cards. The overall theme was, "don't be fooled by mah pretty watercolors. I'll tell it to you straight, bitch. Fuck yo sugarcoating." There actually was a bit of stereotypical-sassy-black-woman tone to them. It was... surprising.

And they seem to like my friend Alyssa, who's been going through a lot of crap lately. But they don't like my boyfriend, although that could be his wariness of them reflecting back.

So does anyone else work with this deck? What are your opinions?

I actually have TWO copies of this deck. The first one got damaged. :( Spilled something on it, and several of the cards stuck together. I love fairy things.

That said, once I actually started getting into Tarot, my enthusiasm waned significantly. I love the trumps, but the court cards do nothing for me. Especially since my significator, the Page of Cups, is so godsbedamned ugly...

If you like it, that's great! I love my first Tarot deck too, though she tends to get distracted, and sometimes she just tells stories. ;) Tarot decks are such personal items, I don't think anyone can point to a mass produced run and say "that's a bad deck."
KARMA: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I can. My first deck was this dirt-cheap chain bookstore special based very, very loosely on the Marseilles tarot and it had no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

I'm also glad I'm not the only one to spill stuff on her cards. XD

Just getting back into tarot after a 3 year break (my bank account currently hates tarot).
When I first started I really struggled with tarot until I brought the Mystic Faerie on a whim in Waterstone's. I'm not a big lover of cutesy fairy things but this deck worked.
It was the Minors. I was OK with the Majors, actually I find some of the Majors in the MF to be a bit iffy (like the Death card) but I really struggled with the Minors. Then I got the MF and each suit has a story! It's like this deck was designed with my brain in mind. Even though it's been 3 years I can still remember each story (I have a good memory for stories, nothing else) and so can still look at the cards and know what each one means.
It helped me more than anything with learning other decks as well. Because I could recall the stories from the MF to use as a basic meaning for other decks and then add in things from the pictures of each deck.

I haven't actually done a reading for 3 years, still, as I've lost all my confidence. Saying that, people at work know I have an interest in tarot (I gave a tarot deck as a leaving present for the person's job that I was the replacement for - I'd been part-time and took her full-time post when she left. She did want one, I asked her which of my decks she wanted) they've asked if I would do a reading for them. Won't be happening for a long, long time, maybe never, as I need to start reading for myself then practising on the internet but if I ever do a reading for them, it would be with the MF. But my deck is one of my few decks that I am very possessive about and will not let anybody else touch. Luckily, somebody on another forum was giving away a copy of the MF for free (well, postage costs so £2.80) so I've now got a spare deck that I can use if I ever do readings for people that I know are going to want to handle the cards.

Anyway, overall opinion of this deck: while I don't usually like artwork like it, I love this deck. It's not my favourite deck in terms of the artwork, but I love how easy it is to use. I've just got to make myself start reading again with it despite wanting to play with all my new decks (I must have got over 10 new decks this month. I always go over the top with buying stuff to try to cheer myself up/keep my brain busy when I can feel the sneaky hate spiral of depression building up). As I know that if I try to start with the new decks I'm just going to get overwhelmed and then give up. Whereas I know from past experience that the MF works for me.

Beverage sippers unite! My Dragon Tarot also took a hit once...which is weird, since I only used it for the very first time last week. It must've just been water. I think my poor Faerie deck got milked.

I had more than one deck chewed on by my dog. Didn't matter where I stored them, I think she had the power to Accio them from anywhere.

I've had a few decks I'd call bad--or at least bad for me--mostly they either were so spare that I didn't have any symbolism to get my subconscious rolling, or they were beautiful but themed around mythologies I knew nothing about and so I felt like I only shallowly understood the symbolism that was there.
