I need a tarot reader name!
« on: February 25, 2013, 11:26:35 pm »
As I may have mentioned before, I'm currently working on a show in which I play a tarot reader (yes, I am method acting! ;)) within a circus (and will be doing readings for the audience during the performance).

One of the cool things about this performance (besides the performing and getting to read tarot), is that I've essentially been tasked to create a fully-realized character as I will be doing a lot of audience interaction. I'm creating my own costume, clown makeup, act, everything--including a name.

And I'm stumped! I love names with a passion but I'm struggling to come up with something perfect and I'm running out of time. Any suggestions?

Things to keep in mind:
-the show is set in post WW II England and the cast is uniformly cockney, including myself.
-some other character names (to avoid similarities): Evie, Basil, Jane, Scatterbrain, the Bum, the Boss, Mary
-originally, there was a suggestion that I was actually Death, hanging out in mortal form at this circus. This was later dropped but secretly, I wouldn't mind a subtle hint that I am still Death in disguise.
-I feel that being a "Madam firstname" would be too cliche for me. an original, fully realized character is key!

Names I've considered:
Medulla-Marie (Medulla's a joke but I felt it had the right feeling to it), Ophelia-Marie, Lola, Penny (short for Persephone or Pentacle?), Sybil. I still like Sybil and Pentacle, but I fear Sybil and Basil are too close and Pentacle a hard name to pair up with, as in Something Pentacle/Pentacle Something.

Thoughts?

Consider

LIBITINA: Roman myth name of a goddess of corpses, funerals, and the dead. Her name was synonymous with the word "death."

MORANA: Slavic name meaning "death." In mythology, this is the name of a goddess of death and winter.

THANA (θάνα): Feminine form of Greek Thanatos, meaning "death." Compare with another form of Thana.

VALDÍS: Old Norse name composed of the elements valr "the dead, the slain" and dís "goddess, woman," hence "goddess of the slain in battle."

VALDIS: Swedish and Norwegian form of Old Norse Valdís, meaning "goddess of the slain in battle."

All the names came from http://www.20000-names.com/death_names_dead_names.htm

----

Penny (short for Persephone or Pentacle?),

Well in greek mythology Macaria is daughter of Hades and goddess of blessed death ...

So Penny (Penelope) Macaria?

Thanks for the quick responses! Nothing sings out "I'm the one!" to me yet, but I'm also rather tired and still a bit sick, so perhaps in the morning?

I'm also back-tracking on the Death idea somewhat but not entirely either in case a good name comes of it.  I did a character reading for myself last night and I got lots of pentacles and the Wheel of Fortune. Fortune, fate, luck, destiny, prophecy, Fortuna, Tyche? Does that train of thought also ring any bells?

MOIRA? As in, the Moirai, the Fates? It feels incomplete but a definite possibility! The things I come up with when I should be asleep...I still like Sybil but it feels too similar to Basil still.

Moira Morgana?  (evoking the Morrigan for the battle/death imagery)

Moira Sophia?  (going more with the idea of the Fates, seeing the future, and wisdom)

I'm not good with names, but those two popped into my head when I read your posts.

Moira has a vaguely Scottish feel to it, which somewhat fits in with the English theme.

THIS LINK tells about Scottish last names (classifications) and about halfway down lists the top 100 Scot Surnames. Hope it helps.
