How do you prep for divination?
« on: May 27, 2014, 05:12:57 pm »
Just wondering if you have any specific rituals or actions you do to prepare for divination?

do you do different things for different types of divination?

do you have anything you do to "wrap up" the session?

why do you choose to do it like this?

When I work with runes or tarot, I pour some soda into a glass for Loki and sit in front of his resting place in my apartment. Since I am working runes under his supervision (or at least, with his permission), the body of the "ritual" is acknowledging to him that I know he's there, I'm in his spot, and I know he's watching - and not leaving until I'm done.

With my pendulum and my oracle deck, the divination is simply part of my communication with Sarasvati. I use one or both of them to get her opinion and her advice. With the oracle deck, I take a deep breath and clear my head, and then shuffle the cards one after another. Then when it feels "right," I pull one. With the pendulum, I usually repeat her name until the end starts swinging wildly, then I start talking and watch how it moves. If it stops, that's means she's disagreeing or displeased. And when she's feeling either of those, the pendulum will indeed come to a violent and sudden stop, and stay unnaturally still, as if it were being held at the end.

I don't think I approach divination in the same way as most. Instead of relying on internal abilities, I am asking external powers for their input.
KARMA: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I have never done anything to prep or wind down for my tarot readings. I just try to focus once I touch the cards and try not to get distracted until I have finished. Seems to work for me.

If I'm reading Ogham for someone else, I have a set ritual. I say the frith charm from the Carmina Gadelica, although referencing my gods rather than Mary. I light candles for Ogma and the Morrigan. After divining, I just say a prayer of thanks and extinguish the candles.

If I'm reading for myself, I don't usually bother with so much ceremony, though it depends on the purpose of the reading and whether it's tarot or Ogham. Ogham always feels like a more religious experience and like it needs... something.

The only ritual I really do is when I'm reading runes. I'll say a little prayer to ask Woden for His guidance, and then take a reading. I might also light a candle, if it's just a rune reading, rather than part of a larger ritual. I do something similar when doing other runic work, like making talismans or helms, or when I'm making a rune set. There isn't really a formal finish point, though. It ends when it's done.

I don't normally bother with anything when I'm using tarot or oracle decks, except to be clear who I'm reading for, and what they want to know, and make sure I have something ready to take notes in as I interpret the reading. I do it this way mostly because I have a tarot deck that hates ritual, and so I kind of got used to not bothering with incense or special set-ups or anything fancy. I just get the cards out and read, and I pack up when I'm done.

If I'm scrying, I usually do the candles-wards-etc shebang. If I'm reading cards, I set up a little crystal grid, more to give myself a definite 'up' for reading reversed cards and so I don't feel like I'm just throwing cards on the boring surface in front of me than for any spiritual or magical reason.

In general, I like to shower when I get home from work to wash off the day, then I'm relaxed enough for a good reading. If I'm still having issues focusing, I do the LBRP which gets me focused quickly.
