Favorite tarot spread?

I love my tarot cards and I would like to work with them and try some new spreads. Whats your favorite?

I really like the past, present, future spread.  I also like to just pull a card to act as an oracle.

Well, most of the time I use a four or five card cross spread.
1. card usually standing for the situation, 2. for things to do, 3. for things not to do, 4. for the solution and 5. (if used) for an advice.
Since this spread can be adjusted for a lot of questions, I barely use other spreads.

I don't know that I could point to a single favorite.

One that I use very often is called the body spread.  It's hard to make a representation of it here, but after looking at the positions below, you can kinda adjust to make it look right.  This spread gives a good overview of a person.

**1**
**2**
6*3*7
**4**
8*5*9

1 What the person is thinking
2 What the person is saying
3 What the person feels in the heart
4 What the person feels from intuition
5 What the person truly desires
6 What the person is keeping secret
7 What the person is sharing
8 Where the person is coming from
9 Where the person is heading to

I also use a chakra spread... one card for each energy center.  The card represents the situation currently affecting the chakra.

For yes/no's, I use three cards.  Two uprights is a potential yes, with the reversed card indicating a major factor.

Three uprights is a strong yes.

Two reversed is a potential no, with the upright card representing a positive influence that could easily change the situation
lol you get the idea.

And for relationship compatibility, I use three cards for each question. card1 is one person's pov, card 2 is the couple's compromise, and card3 is the other person's pov.

I don't think I have a favorite spread per say.... but the one I enjoy doing for others the most is a past life spread that includes 17 cards.

I rarely work with tarot, preferring instead to use my runes. However runic spreads work perfectly well for tarot.

One of my favourites for a complex reading is the Yggdrasil spread, also called the Cosmic-Axis. This is an 11 rune/card layout. It is layed out like the diagram below and read from the bottom up, as a tree grows from the roots.

10 - 09 - 11
-- - 08 - --
06 - 05 - 07
-- - 04 - --
02 - 01 - 03

The lowest teir is The Past:
01: Major past influences, the root of te situation
02: Subconscious responses tro the past
03 : Conscious responses to the past

04: Link rune: outcome of past influences that lead to the present state

The middle teir is The Present:
05: the present situation
06: current subconscious influences
07: current conscious influences

08: Link rune: results that present influences may have if we take bo action or continue current action / alternately: obstacles/ challenges to the future

The top teir is the Future:
09: Probable outcome
10: affect of outcome on subconscious mind
11: affect of outcome on conscious mind

There is another way of reading this layout as well, using the worlds of the Norse cosmology, but that gets a little complex to get into here.

Hope you like this layout.

Ooh, nice.  I just tried it in a general reading for myself, and it worked really well.

It takes me forever to remember what each position refers to when I try a new spread, and if you have to keep going back and checking your notes while you're reading it ruins the flow.  (For me, at least).  But that one makes a degree of instinctive sense.

To be honest, these days I usually don't use a 'spread' so much as just lay the cards out in a line and read them like a sentence.  I'm not sure if I'm finding my own style, or just getting lazy.  :)

That actually tevhnically IS a spread.. I've heard it referred to as a Storybook spread.
Each card is like a page in the book.

I tried that once. Didn't work out. :p

I love the ol' Celtic cross spread. It just makes sense to me.

I also like the tetractys/sacred triangle, but it seems kind of specific to the Book of Doors Oracle. Hmmm, I bet you could reinterpret it for tarot, though.

Yeah, the Celtic Cross was the one I learned with, so it's the one I default to whenever I'm reading for someone else or doing a more 'serious' reading than just throwing a few cards for practice or for a heads-up on the day ahead.

Instructions for a triangular spread came with my Papus deck.  It starts as a triangle, but then you read one side and the three corners so it becomes a sort of square, and then a layer of cards go around the outside and it becomes a circle.  I don't honestly understand it at all, but I can scan the instruction leaflet if anyone's interested.  It's way too long and complicated to type out.

Yeah, the Book of Doors' triangle spread is a bit complicated, too. At least it doesn't get expanded into a square, and then a circle. I think I'd croak if I had to read a big spread. 10 - 11 cards is about my limit.

The same goes for runes, and in fact with runes is even less practical than with tarot. With the Elder Futhark there are only 24 runes. Using half the runes, or more, in one spread is a bit ridculous.

My favourite spread is the one card draw. :P

Okay, seriously now, I like small spreads, like three card ones. I do pretty well with five or seven cards. The larger a spread gets for me, though, the more confused I become, and I forget what each position is supposed to mean.

That's what I like about the Yggdrasil spread, left us subconscious, right is consciou, and up the center just tells the story.

It takes a large reading and makes it simple.
