Buying vs. Receiving a Tarot Deck

So, I ended up buying Tarot for Dummies at the local bookstore. It was the only way to get the R/W deck, but the book itself actually helped me grasp the concept of tarot. The images are easy to understand, too.

I did a reading for myself today, too, and it was difficult to understand at first, but as I put the images together, it made more sense. I don't get a sense of the deck's personality yet, but I do get inspired the longer I examine a card for its meanings. Maybe the cards are being considerate of my newbie-ness.

Not strickly pertaining to the topic but there is a course for tarot on line that uses the Rider Waite deck that can be down loaded and containes all the cards.  It's at http://learntarot.org/  It's a pretty descent course and has some benefit owing to it's availability to be downloaded and practiced off line.

Even though I've had a thousand and one Tarot books (and have given them away over the years), I suddenly want to buy Tarot for Dummies. It sounds intriguing!

I've found aeclectic.net to be helpful too.  They've got a section for learning it as well as showing loads of different sets of tarot too.

I actually have bought two decks and been gifted one. I prefer actually buying my decks, simply because the one deck I was gifted I didn't resonate with. Buying decks allows me to find ones that speak to me~

NOt directly a response to yours but inspired by it.

One thing I have noticed is that no one speaks of a deck as individual vice just one in a mass production of decks.  Yet I've known of a number of people that have held multiple copies of a production run and none of them spoke to them yet go to another store and the very same deck has a package that seems to jump off the shelves at them.

For example I know for me I wanted to purchased a Rider Waite deck some years ago (think three decades) , yet all the ones on the shelf I touched felt like cardboard.  Yet one particular deck that was rather dusty and on a bottom self seemed to actually move to get my attention, which happens to be the deck I also purchased.  That deck worked true for me for many years before it was lost in one of my many moves in the service.  Yet I've never found another that felt alive as that one did.

Of course that whole concept goes back to the notion of a deck being birthed with a practitioners energy.  Then when the two come together it becomes apparent.  Family belief there so it may not apply to others.

Really? I've always been under the impression that when people talk about decks having personalities, or about decks "feeling right," they were talking about them as the individual packs of cards.

For me, I've noticed that I'm drawn to a couple new(to me anyway) decks, and they're all done by the same artist.  Couldn't it also be the artist's interpretation/art speaking to another through their artwork?  I've not been able to find a deck for quite awhile til I got my present favourite deck.  I've recently learned that she's done other decks and there's 3 or 4 others that jump out at me and screams "Come get me!"
