A Tarot reading has got me worried
« on: July 10, 2017, 06:40:37 pm »
I've never done anything with tarot before - the other day a friend did a mini-reading (by getting me to draw three cards, and looking up the meaning of each) using the Witches Tarot.

The cards were as follows:-
Princess of Pentacles
The Tower
Ace of Cups

The question I had in my mind was around my job.  Initially I had been thinking about how to combat stress in my job, but by the time I actually drew the cards all I was thinking about was my job generally in very unspecific terms.

Upon looking up each of the cards my friend interpreted this to mean that a journey I've been on is coming to an end (Princess of Pentacles), there will be a period of disruption (The Tower) and then some kind of new beginning (Ace of Cups).

This has me worried, because I'm assuming this means I am going to lose my job and have that period of disruption, which I don't need in my life.  Also, it's unclear what/when the ambiguous new beginning will manifest - it might not necessarily be a new job.

Is this guaranteed to happen, or is this just one possible future?  Also, what if I happen to be someone who's not historically placed much belief in tarot, actually (no disrespect at all to anyone who does believe in it)?

Thank you all in advance.

No - it's not guaranteed to happen. It's one possible outcome if nothing changes. I am pretty ambivalent about tarot myself. I've had some stunningly accurate readings and some terrible ones and everything in between. I've certainly learned not to lose sleep over what the cards seem to be saying.

In your position I'd have  drawn a further card requesting some further insight and depending what I saw maybe further cards. A three card draw is a bit of a blunt tool.

That's one way to read this, but there are others. For example, while a "disruption" surely could mean losing your job, it might instead mean someone else quitting, getting fired, transferred, etc. which impacts your job in some disruptive way that leads to a new start of some type. Another, the disruption might be something like office politics or a major disagreement -- no job loss at all. Etc. Three cards really don't give you much to go on.

No, divination only shows possibilities, generally one of the most likely at the time of the reading -- if nothing changes. And interpretation is the bear in the room. This is way people learning divination are often told to do daily readings and record them -- so they can look back at them and learn from future events what the cards/runes/etc. are saying to them.

Thank you!  We actually did have a colleague go off sick recently and then suddenly announced they're taking early retirement due to ill health, and that'll definitely cause disruption - I hope that's all this is.

Thanks again!

I've been reading tarot for like, two decades now and one of the things I am careful to stress is that no reading is ever the future carved in stone. I think of readings like snapshots of what is most likely to happen on the current path. Shit, part of the reason to get a reading is so you can find different solutions to life's problems.

I will say that The Tower usually is a bit of a shitshow, but your Ace of Cups seems to indicate things working out in a pretty emotionally satisfying way. So, yeah, I agree with Randall basically.

I think everyone here has given you the best take on how to look at this, and they're all more experienced than I.  I wanted to add that I've read my own cards, and more so the cards of others, on and off since 2004.  I have drawn the tower so many times.  I've drawn it enough that it stopped scaring me.  I think it can mean a disruption, but what I realized was that I was already cognizant of that disruption.  I.E.  I went through a phase where I didn't want to do a reading because I would afraid it would tell me my relationship was going to end.... because I already knew my relationship was going to end (deep down I was really unhappy) and I was just too frightened by the prospect of my first, young love being over.
