I think I will leave the quote intact just as it displayed automatically; it's what one gets if one has both parts of the quote code on the same line, with all text removed. So on one hand, no more disappearing quotes, but on the other, still quotefusion.

Fortunately, removing the text doesn't automatically put the quote codes on the same line; one has to do that as a separate and intentional action. So I doubt it will be much of a problem.

However, what I have begun doing recently is to copy-and-paste the entire original quote, including the quote code, as many times as there are topic points that I wish to reply to. Then I just delete the portion of the original quote which is not relevant to the specific topic I am addressing in that point.

You can always manually break the quote up by typing in (braces used instead of brackets so as not to confuse the forum software):
