Asa newcomer to The Cauldron, I feel very silly asking this, but how do I reply to a comment? I can't see a 'post' or 'reply' button and would like to respond to comments on the 'gods and goddesses' section. Thankyou in advance...

Use the quote option! If you're replying on the web, it should be at the top right of the post you want to reply to. If you're using Tapatalk, hold down your finger on the post you want to reply to and select quote from the options that come up.

There's no reply button for a very good reason: it's one of our rules to quote a previous post in almost all circumstances. (This makes it much easier to follow conversation, especially in long threads or those that ebb and flow over a long period of time.)

It's fine to edit the portion you're quoting to just have a sentence or two of what you're responding to specifically (and if you're replying to a long post, that's highly encouraged) but leave in the part of the quote code that has a bunch of numbers in it (example below) and the close quote code.

Here's what the part you need to leave in looks like, for this reply, between the square brackets.
Code: [Select]

Thankyou! I've followed your instructions and managed to post the reply. I will look around the forum and try to learn how things work now....thanks again and blessed be.

If you're familiar with HTML at all, BBCode is sort of similar. Basically, think of it like bookends. The first quote code (the long number one, usually) starts the bit you're quoting and the ending quote code ends it. You want to end it before you write the new things.

Put your response after the part that says
Code: [Select]
[/quote] ... and it'll be in plain text as a reply.

Thanks Jenett - I will remember that and try to get it right in future!

Hope it's okay to practise here -- I had the same question as Moonsong, so it seemed appropriate.

Hello, Bat: can't speak to the issue, but you did just edit a post, so there's that.

And now you're replying to an earlier post in the thread! Look at you, learning the stuff and the things!

(If anyone is getting an unreasonable number of notifications because I'm nattering away to myself here, I sincerely apologize...)

If they are, it's because they've chosen to subscribe to posts in the Test Form, where 'people nattering to themselves as they figure out how things work on TC, and practice doing them, often repeatedly,' is what the forum is for.

You seem to be learning the ropes pretty well. Just one nitpick, what you did earlier wasn't 'editing a post', but 'editing a quote' - that's only a quibble about terminology, though, since editing quotes, specifically trimming them to only the part one is replying to (which is what you did) is a useful skill, and a practice we encourage.
