Yuletide 2013
« on: December 25, 2013, 12:57:36 pm »
So, every year, there's a fanfic exchange for small fandoms called Yuletide: the stories are posted anonymously on December 25th, and authors are revealed on January 1st. Because it's an exchange, everyone who gets a story is supposed to write one, and this year there are close to 2000 people.

(And some people get inspired, and write more than one story.)

One of the things I love about Yuletide is that 'fandom' has a very broad definition. There are always tons of mythology stories, and classical literature ones, but there's also fic based on YouTube videos and blog posts and computer games and XKCD cartoons and pretty much anything else you can think of.

I'm only just starting to dive into the archive, so I don't have recs yet, but wanted to start the thread, because I know there's several other forumites doing Yuletide this year. Post the awesome story you got! Post pointers at other awesome ones!

The archive sometimes bogs down a bit on Christmas Day when everyone's trying to get into it - if you have trouble loading things, just try again in a bit.

(My gift this year was that someone wrote me a really lovely story set in the early parts of Foyle's War, a BBC mystery series set during WWII in southern England. It has food geekery and ethics and difficult conversations and Sam being awesome (but she always is), and it is just stunningly amazingly awesome! You can read it over at http://archiveofourown.org/works/1064329 if that's your kind of thing.)

Oooooh, that's an awesome one!

I actually got three fics, somehow, two for the Sorcerer's Apprentice movie (shut up) and one Marvel comics-verse starring Squirrel Girl.

You en't going to hear any bashing of the SA movie from this corner, at least. I liked it.

Haha, awesome! I had assumed I was the only one who wasn't allergic to that much cheese.

Well in that case, I received this Dave/Drake fic and this crossover drabble that has me curious about the other canon.

There is a time and a place for cheese. And it's not like I was expecting anything else from a movie with Nicholas Cage in.  Probably would have been disappointed had I seen it in theatre, but at home, with a companion to spork it with (and some liquid refreshment)? Definitely enjoyable.

Time for reveals! The story I wrote this year is for the Odyssey, so I've been looking forward to sharing it here.

Anagnorisis is about what happens when Odysseus and Penelope get past their initial reunion, and about change and changing again.

(Anyone else want to share what you wrote?)

Shine Over Babylon is my first attempt at Yuletide-ing. Not really sure what to say about it; I wasn't really going for Deep Meaningful Themes. :o

My fic is actually also relevant, since I wrote Aftertaste, about Persephone and Cassandra.
