I'm still behind with my blog reading, but I'm looking forward to catching up with that one, sounds interesting.

Last weekend I wrote about Jump scares in horror movies, with mini reviews of just a few of my favourite films in that genre.  Never too early to start getting in the Halloween mood in my opinion!

I love horror movies, though I don't tend to find them scary.  I'm a pretty big fan of gore, but a movie doesn't need gore to be enjoyable.  I really like the ones that highlight the way that people can be really messed up in the head (because I personally think humans are one of the scariest things out there).  I do love supernatural horror movies, and I get a kick out of laughing at the dumb stuff people do when faced with extreme circumstances (no, seriously, you don't need to go out and look for the monster, alone, in the dark, without a weapon *sigh). 

I actually don't care for jump scares, for a couple of reasons.  Sometimes they trigger my heart to race at an uncomfortable level (that is an unrelated thing, but jump scares can be a trigger for it), but what really bugs me is that anytime I jump when watching a movie, someone invariably asks if I was scared (or when I was younger, made fun of me for being scared of whatever the thing was that jumped out).  I get startled, but I don't typically get scared of things in scary movies.  Hubby asked me once if the clown in IT scared me, and I had to explain that yes, I thought the murdering of people was something to be concerned about...but the fact he was a clown made it actually slightly less 'scary' for me (and scared really isn't the right word...I don't tend to think "ahhh run away" when I think of the big bads in scary movies, I think "how can I fight and win against this?")

This is a super lovely post, and I think it brings up a few really awesome points.

Firstly, I agree that finding yourself and being true to yourself is super scary and hard...but so worth it!  I also agree that sometimes being angry/upset all the time is too much, and we need a break.  I was actually talking with a friend this morning, about how refreshing it is to see marginalized groups/people in ordinary situations (or in bright/happy ones), because often ALL you see in media is them being (rightfully) angry and upset, and some people take that to mean "all X type of people are angry and upset...all the time!"  It's also one reason why I think everyone needs to spend some time figuring out what makes them happy...and then making that a part of their life.

Oooh this is so very real!  I was definitely raised to believe that staying busy was a virtue, and that there "is always something you can be doing."  Which, in my family, translates to:  you should be cleaning, or doing some 'real' work or otherwise doing the 'adult' thing.  It has taken a long time for me to own my own process and to honor my off days and rest times.

Today, I was inspired by the rune study group I am a part of and how Re-studying can bring a depth to your understanding of a subject you are already quite familiar with.

That sounds interesting Kylara. I have to say that runes have always seemed both magical and mysterious to me.

Really good points, and I also think it's worth remembering that, no matter how perfect a person's public persona is, we are all humans and everyone has their down moments and bad days and trying to compare yourself to someone's posted stories is like trying to live up to a storybook hero....you are only seeing one dimension of them.

I really love this image of both the heart growing weary as a metaphor for death, but also that the fix is to bind it up from the outside!  It makes me think of hugs in a different way...

Hope is so powerful, and I think that it's sometimes hard to hold onto, when the world is crazy...but of course that's when we need it the most!

I have always seen more faith in the little things than in the big ones.  I feel like big actions are often done for slightly self-serving reasons, and while big stuff can be dramatic, it is the constant, little actions.....or that one tiny thing someone does when you are at your lowest, that sticks with you.  Some of my most powerful moments are tiny things, stuff the other person probably doesn't remember at all.

I'm a crier.  I cry all the time, for all kinds of reasons.  I do think that we have built a society that penalizes crying, no matter your gender.  For males, it's seen as weak or 'girly', but for women it's often seen as manipulative.  I used to hate crying, and sometimes it still makes me uncomfortable (especially when I cry at every tv show or movie....or books), but I'm getting more accustomed to it (and breaking free from those ingrained social reactions).

I pre-wrote this week's blog, as mom-in-law is visiting, but I wrote about Selective reading.  This is something I know the value of, but I am still struggling to actually put into practice as often as I should.
