The 2021 Gender Census is Open!
« on: February 11, 2021, 04:33:36 pm »
It's that time of year again - I was just thinking about it the other day, and when I logged into my email this morning, lo, there was the notification!

------
'Welcome to the eighth annual gender census!

'I'll start by making it as clear as possible who's invited to take part.

'Most people fit tidily into one of these categories:
Woman/girl - all the time, solely, and completely (may be cisgender or transgender)
Man/boy - all the time, solely, and completely (may be cisgender or transgender)
This survey intends to collect information about everyone who DOESN'T fit into this system. Anyone who doesn't feel like they fit into one of these two boxes is invited to participate. There are no geographical restrictions.

'If you hesitate or struggle to place yourself into just one of the two boxes, or if you know for sure that these boxes were not made for you, please do continue!'
------

More info here, or in the threads I posted to let people know about previous years' iterations of it.

Results have been published (full report, summary); also, Cassian is now doing a supplementary survey (on specific usage of they/them pronouns, and on the sir/ma'am dilemma), open to anyone (NB/GQ or not) who lives in an English-speaking country.

The bit about "Mx" being popular as a title was interesting. I'm not a fan, mostly because (1) there seems to be no consensus on how to pronounce it, and (2) none of the options are appealing. "Mix"? "Mucks"? "Emex" (like Amex?) ? (I prefer "M." but that seems to be a minority opinion).

I'm curious what will come out of the follow-up survey.

There’s not really an international consensus on how to pronounce Ms, either - in the UK we say ‘muzz’, but I think there you say ‘mizz’? Here, I mostly hear Mx as ‘mux’. If we have to have titles, I rather like Mx, but M. is good too. I also have sympathy with the spouse’s anti-titles view - which seems to be leading above Mx in Cassian’s survey. The spouse managed to get their bank to take any title at all off their record. It’s a bit more of a struggle with other organisations.

I do like Cassian’s work on this. Interesting to see that ‘queer’ and ‘gender non-conforming’ are both being used more than last year.

Personally, I hate "Mx" and hate it when people use it for me, which they invariably do when they find out I'm NB because in the mainstream it's "the" non-binary title, right? Argh. It bothers me less when people call me Mrs., to be honest, and that drives me nuts because I kept my last name, which is my mom's last name, so they usually call me Mrs. MoragsLastName which just makes it sound like I married my mother.

(It absolutely does not bug me when people call me Mrs. with my husband's last name. That's fair and I just sort of regard it as one of my magical names.)

My title preference is Mz. Pronounced the same as Ms. -- however you pronounce that, as I know there are regional variations.

I wouldn't mind M., though, if people need to use a title for me and are uncomfortable using Ms. or Mrs. And it would go with any of my last names -- in the case of my pagan name it doubles as my first initial as well, so going by M. Spinner is not totally alien to me.
