The Most Astounding Fact About the Universe

... according to Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

No argument from me!  My very favorite bit was where he talked about the common trope of looking at the stars and feeling small, which never made any sense to me; his words reflect perfectly my own take on it.

Awesome!
Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.

Oh, this is awesome (and fits with a piece of liturgy from my own practice, and the fact I've been geeking more astronomy recently for a variety of reasons. Also, just plain stunning.)

The friend I just showed it to also appreciates the nicely done captioning.

Same here. Just as he said, it makes me feel connected; I'm looking at my kin--cosmic kin, but my kin nonetheless.

I posted this a few days ago in another thread, but it bears repeating:

“The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.”
― the late astronomer Carl Sagan, in the nature series Cosmos; the idea was later recycled in pop culture in a quote from Ambassador Delenn on the TV space opera series Babylon 5 (someone in the Cauldron, I forget who, uses the Delenn quote as their signature line)
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

It's well worth repeating! This quote takes the top spot for ideas that have most influenced my perspective on life, the universe, and everything.

Enjoyed this one very much! He is my current science crush.

Have to admit, I'm more comfortable feeling small. It doesn't make me feel insignificant, it makes my problems seem that way though! :)

You've got me pegged! (And thanks)

BTW, it's not stars--actually our closer relations, our neighbor planets--but Venus and Jupiter are going to be in conjunction (apparently very close together in Earth's sky) this Thursday, March 15. That's actually when they'll be "closest" together, but they're *really* close right now. Check the western sky just after sunset; it's gorgeous.

And then, about 2 weeks after that, Venus and Jupiter will still be incredibly close, but they'll be joined by the sliver of a crescent moon in that western sky. Assuming no cloud cover (PLEASE!), it should be spectacular.

I can't wait to see this! Hopefully the skies are clear here too.

There's also the Transit of Venus on 6 June. Apparently there won't be another in our lifetime.

Yes, it is.
We had a very clear evening sky yesterday and both of them were awesome.

Hope we can take a pic of this.
It will be epic. :)
