Mystery Rock 'Appears' in Front of Mars Rover
« on: January 25, 2014, 02:25:11 am »
After a decade of exploring the Martian surface, the scientists overseeing veteran rover Opportunity thought they’d seen it all. That was until a rock mysteriously "appeared" a few feet in front of the six-wheeled rover a few days ago.

Probably tossed out by the rover's wheels -- at least that seems to be the most likely possibility.

I don't particularly like that explanation, but I haven't come up with anything better

from the article it stated there were two theories. one was the rover pushed it there it self and the other was a fragment from a meteor which hit the surface.

Apearently, the founder of the Journal of Cosmology is suing NASA over lack of investigation of the rock. The dude seems to think it's martian life

Yes, but it seems unlikely that a nearby impact event would have gone un-noticed

I did notice that it appeared to have grown out of the rock like some kind of fungus.
But even if it did, it would still be drawn form locally available materials

A case of the simplest and most likely reason actually being the reason. Unfortunately, that turns out to be the case more often than not.

Not to mention the fact that it was essentially an accident
Now, we need to figure out where that rock came from; it's a hint that there could be some very interesting layers exposed nearby

That's what was in the link I posted: they figured out the solution because they figured out where it had come from.

They figured out that this piece broke off that rock over there ...
I want to see the layers around where that rock came from
