Earth-Sized Planet Discovered Orbiting Around Nearest Star
« on: October 17, 2012, 07:20:23 pm »
The only problem is it orbits 25 times closer to Alpha Centauri B than the Earth does to the Sun. It's year is just over 3 Earth days and its estimated temperature is 2200 degrees (F).

Aha, that's what I was going to do and had forgotten, post the link to Universe Today's article about this.

Despite the ways it's not quite what has been imagined in speculative fiction, it's still close enough that I'm jubilant.  I've been waiting for this for most of my life!

But according to the article I read on this (I haven't checked out your link yet, Randall), current theory posits that rocky planets likely form in multiples in a given star system. So if that one Earth-sized planet is there, others likely orbit Alpha Centauri B and may not be quite so sweltering.

Road trip!
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

That's what some thing, although there isn't much evidence to support it as yet. However, I suspect a lot of planet finding effort will now be focused the the Alpha Centauri B system.

Oh thank gods, it's not just me.

I wanted to say something about mindworms but figured it was too damn esoteric.
