'Beautiful' Dinosaur Tail Found Preserved in Amber

"This is the first time we've found dinosaur material preserved in amber"

The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

A great day for the human species! We should all be celebrating this, it brings us closer, as a species, to understanding our world's past.
"The worshippers of the gods go to them; to the manes go the ancestor-worshippers; to the Deities who preside over the elements go their worshippers; My devotees come to Me." ... "Whichever devotee desires to adore whatever such Deity with faith, in all such votaries I make that particular faith unshakable. Endowed with that faith, a votary performs the worship of that particular deity and obtains the fruits thereof, these being granted by Me alone." - Sri Krishna

Good catch. I should have paid more attention to the dateline--although it was still news to me.

Unfortunately, most of the scientific and scholarly discoveries made in the last two years have largely been overlooked, at least in the USA. I blame the current political situation. The new outlets simply aren't covering science anymore, because they spend all their time talking about Trump. This goes for both pro-Trump and anti-Trump outlets. It's all that people want to hear about.

The same thing is true for international events. US news outlets aren't covering it anymore. The other day I was asking people about a few major events outside the US, and most of them didn't know about them. For example, most Americans are unaware that the Emperor of Japan has announced his plans to abdicate in 2019, or that most the major ISIS strongholds in Syria have been captured.

The only thing Americans are paying attention to right now is politics. It's annoying. I suspect that aliens could land and half the US population wouldn't notice it, as long as it happened overseas.

Everything is politics. Politics is just a word for what's going on when we have to figure out how to live together as a society. And, yes, US citizens and news outlets can be woefully solipsistic and underinformed about the world beyond US borders, and I consistently share frustration with that. That said, I mean, we have to pay constant attention to domestic affairs these days, because the US political scene has become much more unpredictable, erratic, and violent, and, like, thousands of children are being put in internment camps right now, you know? There are literally goon squads kicking down doors and tearing apart families and people being disappeared, and there's a wave of lynchings and white supremacist shootings going on across the country, and it's...a lot to keep track of.

I don't find that a useful definition. It's far too broad. If that become the new definition of politics, we would just have to find a new word for what we *used* to call politics... that is, the machinations of the government and it's various members and institutions. In a democracy or republic, that obviously includes the citizenry.

As for this, I generally agree with you. I think people should still try to be aware of international news as well as internal affairs, however. I don't see why one should come at the expense of the other. In the 1960s there was a lot of shit going on in the USA, and people still managed to pay attention to other countries. I don't see why people can't the same today.

Honestly, the sort of news outlets that have ceased covering science to focus on talking about Trump never did do a very good job of covering science.

I believe the word you're looking for is... 'government'. Or possibly 'machinations of government' or 'party politics' or 'affairs of state'.

The definition Val is applying is not 'new'; your definition and hers are, as English-language words, of similar age, around 500 years old. (See Online Etymological Dictionary, politic, politics, political.)

I mean, agreed. And American ignorance of the lives of people outside US borders (and unwillingness to see those lives as important as our own) is an major part of how we got into this mess in the first place. I know I try to pay attention to both.

Well. I stand corrected. I can't say I've ever seen politics used in that sense before.
