Due to a quirk of quantum physics, it seems the temperature of a gas can drop below absolute zero.

interesting, I remember hearing about this a few years ago as a blurb, but nothing more. Granted that I am a biologist and not a physicist, so it wouldn't be popular in the normal stuff i read.

After doing a bit more reading on my part, it doesn't look like this is the first time a negative absolute temperature has been achieved, but rather the first time it has been done in a relatively "large" group of atoms.

It appears to have more to do with entropy and kinetic energy that with actual temperature

True -- it seems to depend on how you define temperature and how you define absolute zero.
