Agh! Why Wasn't I in Iceland for the Solar Storm?!
« on: March 09, 2012, 03:00:59 pm »
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

Great picture. It's been many years since I saw one live. Living in South Texas and now in Central Texas means many years between Northern lights shows.

I would guess that it's unenhanced - I've seen auroras that weren't all that much less spectacular.  Not, AFAIR, in Calgary; my best aurora experiences have been at Camp Dundurn, back when it was the summer training facility for Canadian Forces Reserve units in the prairies (and, holy crap, I can't believe that little patch of prairie has its own Wiki entry; all I was expecting was to be able to approximate its latitude) - it's less than 1* farther north, so I'm guessing it's a matter of less light pollution and perhaps of broader horizons with little blockage (Dundurn doesn't completely lack hills, trees, or buildings, but they're much smaller and fewer).

I'd venture that's not even particularly unusual for Iceland, given its latitude and small population.  Not that that makes it any less Wow!, just that Icelanders get to Wow! at aurorae more often than most folks.

I miss a lot of things about Alaska, but a massive aurora on a frigid winter night is way up there...
