They have destroyed the iconic Buddhas of Bamiyan, smashed down the fabled “end of the world” gate in the ancient city of Timbuktu and even called for the destruction of Egypt’s ancient pyramids and the Sphinx.

Extreme Islamist movements across the world have developed a reputation for the destruction of historic artifacts, monuments and buildings.

Did they stop to think, what if the Ka'ba in Mecca receives the same treatment, for the same reasons by non Muslims fundamentalists?

Sadkly, that's pretty much how the fundies of any belief system think.

Can anyone explain why I feel so outraged? When I saw them destroy the Buddha statues in Afghanistan, I was heartbroken. I'd never even heard of the "end of the world gate" before I read this, but then I Googled pictures of it and of its destruction, and I was enraged.

Outrage is the proper response, I know...but I don't quite understand it. I hear about people getting killed and in many cases it rolls off my back (Newtown being a huge exception); but some monument I've never heard of gets blown to bits, and I'm heartbroken.
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

I think for me it's because we expect people to die, especially "people" in the generic noun sense, and it's part of the natural order of things in the big picture. Whereas something like this is irreplaceable and ancient, built in such a way to be subject only to the ravages of entropy and erosion, and then... *shrugs*

Though I suppose Buddhists are probably the best equipped out of the major religions to understand the lesson of impermanence and draw something of value philosophically from the destruction.

It also might be similar to book burnings or attacks on public servants (police/firefighters).  It's an attack on a symbol. It is an attack on an idea not a person.  It is intended to remove access to an idea from other people.  Done in a premeditated manner makes it worse.  Someone is intentionally trying to take something from you...Thus personally violating you.  This violation is the intended result as well.  When other people are killed, that isn't personally affecting you unless it is someone you deeply care for.

Look at the uproar about flag burning.

Using this as a jumping off point, I think that with monuments in particular it's a concentrated effort to erase the past.

To not only erase the past but to show one's extremist position is better than the past because it destroys it.

Jack, Skyth, Mel, Randall--I knew I could count on you Cauldronites to help me make sense of this. All very good points.

Not just a destruction but an absolute repudiation of the ideals (and cultures) associated with the symbol.  Such a blatant display of hate.

Along with the End of the World Gate, they also destroyed the Library in Timbuktu which contained many historical books and manuscripts including some of those from the Library of Alexandria.
