Obviously I've not been doing it right.

Well, I am truly unfacebooksavvy (which explains why I do nothing on facebook anyhow)

Me too, which is why I canceled my account a few months ago. I kept getting so much crap in my email from them and couldn't figure out how to make them stop sending me shit. Not to mention their constant "friend suggestions" for one of my friends who died a few years ago. I could go on about how much I hate facebook, but I'll stop now.

Anyway, it was just more hassle than it was worth.

Makes me wonder if what this is really about is what's-her-face (the fluff with the communication issues; don't feel like looking it up) wanting to become a BNP herself.  Especially since there are some folks in the comments who are already involved in chaplaincy/liaison work going, "wait, whaddaya mean you've been talking to all these gov't agencies?  not the one I work with, you haven't, or I'd'a heard about it."  (Which also makes me wonder if she even knew there were already pagans doing that sort of thing.)

Geez, I was all ready to give them the benefit of the doubt too, but the more I learn about all this silliness and misinformation, the more this looks like a train wreck. I'm thinking this is going to crash and burn before it even gets off the ground. Hopefully.

So I figure I really should head over there and see what's going on. And about halfway down the page is Oberon doing the "Pagans believe..." bit.

Shit. It's another small group of wankers trying to define what a whole bunch of pagans believe. Good luck with that.

Fortunately, it looks like it is self-destructing.

I never have figured out what possesses people who should know better (and Oberon certainly should) to try to define what Pagans all believe?

I really don't think he knows better about much of anything, to be perfectly frank. While he may be a very influential pagan, I don't think that makes him a very wise (or respectful) pagan.

He is a product of the generic Neo-Pagan movement and at times he seems unable to understand that there are a large number of individual Pagan religion that are not just minor variations on the one "generic Neo-Pagan" theme.

This.  Isaac Bonewits had the same difficulty, and I've seen plenty of other "old-timers" stuck in the same rut - come to that, I had to consciously work at weeding out those kinds of assumptions, and still occasionally run across a clump of assumption-weeds in obscure corners of my mind; the implications that stem from them get into everything.  So on the one hand I have some sympathy... but on the other hand, some folks - Oberon and Isaac among them - really don't/didn't seem to be trying to root them out.  I suspect excessive attachment to certain mythic histories.

And/or a real desire for "Pagan Unity" to the point where they want it so bad that they pretend differences in the various Pagan Religions really are so minor that they can be ignored.

And there's Sunflower's Law again.  I don't want to be in any kind of unity with that kind of intellectual dishonesty; it's creepy and dehumanizing.

Considering the 'long' life of the first incarnation of the thing and considering that 'the pagan (TM) community' is now far more diverse than it was in the 70's, I don't think it will be much more than a trainwreck.

I am utterly surprised. *coughendsarcasmcough*
