Survey Shows U.S. Shifts in Religion
« on: September 17, 2017, 12:11:22 pm »
The Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), self-described as "a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to conducting independent research at the intersection of religion, culture, and public policy," in the last week or so released the results from what they say is the single largest survey of American religious and denominational identity ever conducted:

"The American religious landscape is undergoing a dramatic transformation. White Christians, once the dominant religious group in the U.S., now account for fewer than half of all adults living in the country. Today, fewer than half of all states are majority white Christian. As recently as 2007, 39 states had majority white Christian populations. "

The 14 bullet points listed right below the executive summary are worth reading, as it's quick and highlights the most interesting findings; I found #12 particularly noteworthy:

"Nearly half of LGBT Americans are religiously unaffiliated. Nearly half (46%) of Americans who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) are religiously unaffiliated. This is roughly twice the number of Americans overall (24%) who are religiously unaffiliated."
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

I read the same article a couple of days ago.  In my own experience I have known of people who do remain in traditional religions who also have unconventional beliefs (for those traditions) such as reincarnation or who practice other traditions in parallel or who are eclectic.  Changes are occurring inside and outside of mainstream religions in the USA and I am sure elsewhere.

This is not surprising given the opinions of many religious groups in the US. Religions that shit on people generally don't get a lot of support from the people they condemn. I'm always surprised to find that there are any LGBT members of groups like the Southern Baptists and other groups that are very vocal in their extreme prejudice toward LGBT people.

I just read through the entire report. It's long but well worth reading if you have the time (or read fast).

Precisely.

If I had to guess, I'd say LGBTQ folks are likely way disproportionately represented in pagan paths. I don't have evidence to back that up; just anecdotal stuff and personal experience, and similar reasoning as what accounts for our disproportionate aversion to the mainstream religions.

Here (a different context from the original post) I've met Jewish and Christian trans folks and also a Muslim. And a Wiccan. But the rest I meet are usually agnostic/atheist or I don't know. (And a case of someone formally studying Japanese folklore)

I've had this same experience. There was a silent agreement in the United Methodist church I went to that we had a wide range of beliefs. We also had more than one gay couple in the church. I would definitely describe many of the members as eclectic.
