Pope Francis' Latest Surprise: A Survey on the Modern Family

Quote
The pontiff with a penchant for surprises is making new waves by launching a survey of his flock on issues facing modern families — from gay marriage to divorce. Very  specific questions are being sent to parishes around the globe in  preparation for next year's synod of bishops, a grassroots effort that  experts say is unprecedented.

It does look the this survey is aimed at making changes in actual doctrine so much as tweaking things like how the church handles divorced members or gay couples who have children and want those children raised in the Catholic faith.

Still, this is probably the first time since the very early years of the church (say first or second century) when the laity has been consulted on such issues at all.

I'll be very interested to see how this progresses. An intriguing pope.

Very interesting. He seems to be at least willing to listen to others views and consider things.

Considering he is a Jesuit, this isn't all that surprising. Jesuits have a history of "thinking outside the doctrine box" which is one of the reasons the order is somewhat disliked by some in the church hierarchy.
