Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson told his "700 Club" viewers that divorcing a spouse with Alzheimer's is justifiable because the disease is "a kind of death."

Alzheimer's might be a kind of death (the death the victim's independence and rationality) of  but it is NOT death and deserting your spouse when s/he needs you the most is just plain dirty pool.  If a person wants to divorce their spouse because of Alzheimer's, they should at least have the balls to be honest about it instead of trying to justify their reasoning.

The only reason I can see to do this is financial.  So that care for the patient doesn't eat everything up.  I know a couple who did this because of cancer, and she never left his side, but she wasn't destitute and homeless afterwards.
Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.

My great aunt divorced her husband when his Alzheimer's got so bad he had to go into full-time care.  She cared for him every single day until he died, regardless of their actual marital status.

What I find repugnant isn't that he advocates the divorce, as others have pointed out there can be reasons for it, but rather that he advocates it in order to pursue another relationship. That seems skeevy to me, granted there may be legit reasons to do so, say financial coupled with a new real love while the healthy divorcing partner continues to see to the needs of the ailing but still...yeesh

The vow is "til death do us part" right? So divorce is a no-go no matter what?

And I get to use the new emoticon that Jubes hooked us up with:

I believe it was Wanda Sykes who said that God is playing a cruel game of telephone with Pat by saying something and seeing what comes out the other end.

I read this and my jaw hit the floor. I can see a divorce for financal reasons, as the state can take all the money, home ect. Leaving one person homeless, but to find another relationship. No. I wonder if someone in his family did this.

And I'm sort of curious if he'd give the same advice to a woman who wanted to divorce her husband in order to pursue another relationship.

Pretty sure I know what his answer would be.

Idiocy like that is why I never watch religious programming. I get enough bs and hypocrisy in real life; I don't need to see it on television. :hdsk:
