Odinist Fellowship demands two Anglican churches
« on: August 31, 2017, 01:31:20 am »
This Odinist Fellowship is demanding that two churches be given to them in compensation for the temple grounds allegedly stolen over a thousand years ago.  Does it make sense for modern Odinists to make a demand like that or to link themselves to the sufferings of people who lived so long ago?

Unless they can go back in time and civilise England without Christianity then I say they should fuck off.

No.  It's just a handy excuse for them to try to make people give them shit for free.

Nah, that land doesn't belong to a thousand Odinists. What they seem to be forgetting is that the Christian English were all once pagans.  Why should they, specifically, a group started in 1988, be given the land that probably belonged to tribal groups they're not more related to than anyone else in England? It makes no sense.

That's what I thought.  Most of them were probably raised Christians too and have more in common with the oppressor in this case.

No, IMHO, it does not make sense. In fact, it's silly.

Side note: Many years ago, TC had a member who thought modern Pagans in Europe should demand that all churches and other buildings built on old pagan sites should be torn down and the sites returned to Pagans. I have to wonder if any members of this group know our former member.

Yeah, and I mean, why should it be the Odinists? Let's all demand our own churches purely on the grounds of being pagan! The UK is filled with beautiful old churches; I wouldn't mind owning one.

I remember that vaguely.  Sounds good to me.  although I can see some problems with it,  (Sarcasm alert)

They probably forget that numerous churches were made by artists who were grand are now even more so now.  Like with Michaelangelo who did the big church in Italy 500 years ago and is seen as a masterpiece now and him a genius.  Even if you're not Christian I'm sure you can appreaciate how beautiful it is and I doubt any pagan would demand to have it demolished.  I saw a documentary about a french-canadian artist who was a painter and he was hired back then to do the interior of numerous churches in small towns, and they were beautiful as well.  I'm sure if they asked about who did their local church, they might be surprised by the answer.

No, it really doesn't. I am ALL FOR repatriation in cases where the *direct descendants* of the displaced culture are trying to get back their property from groups who are *not* descendants of the displaced culture. Most cases in the United States involving indigenous artifacts and sites fall into this category. However, in England, the Christians who own those temples/Churches today are just as related to their builders as the Odinists themselves are.
"The worshippers of the gods go to them; to the manes go the ancestor-worshippers; to the Deities who preside over the elements go their worshippers; My devotees come to Me." ... "Whichever devotee desires to adore whatever such Deity with faith, in all such votaries I make that particular faith unshakable. Endowed with that faith, a votary performs the worship of that particular deity and obtains the fruits thereof, these being granted by Me alone." - Sri Krishna

The same could said for Europe in general, and there are lot of churches built on what was once sacred pagan ground (Notre Dame comes to mind)

Just might be a hard sell
